Webnode is a long-established European website-building and e-commerce platform launched in 2008 by Vít Vrba and Ondřej Kratěna. Its origins go back to the Rubicus CMS prototype created in 2006, followed by the Webnode name in 2007. The service expanded rapidly after its public launch, adding an online store, webmail and statistics in 2009, followed by Webnode 2.0 in 2015. In 2020, Webnode became part of team.blue. More than 50 million websites have been created with the platform, and the organization has grown to more than 100 employees.

The service is legally operated by Webnode AG, a Swiss company registered in Zurich, while development and operational activities are also handled by Webnode s.r.o. in Brno, Czech Republic. This gives Webnode a substantial European operational base and a long history in the hosted website-builder market.

Webnode is best understood as a hosted website builder with integrated hosting rather than conventional shared hosting. Customers do not receive cPanel, Plesk, SSH or FTP access. Websites are created, edited and maintained through Webnode's proprietary environment, with hosting, SSL and the underlying server platform handled automatically. A Webnode project therefore works very differently from a conventional WordPress or HTML hosting account and cannot simply be downloaded and moved to another hosting company as a complete server account.

The main portfolio covers Website Builder, Business Websites, Personal Websites, Blogs, E-commerce, AI Website Builder, Domains, Professional Email, Membership Websites, Online Booking and Online Invoicing. Hosting is included with the website rather than sold as an independent hosting package. A permanent free level is available using a Webnode subdomain such as yourwebsite.webnode.page, while Premium plans add custom domains, more storage, higher bandwidth limits and additional business functions.

The editor is aimed mainly at customers who want to create and maintain a website without coding. It includes drag-and-drop editing, responsive layouts, forms, website search, custom HTML embeds, administrator and editor roles, and editing from desktop computers, tablets or smartphones. More than 150 responsive templates are available, together with customizable typography, colors, layouts, video backgrounds, parallax effects, galleries and favicons.

The current platform is fully responsive and modern. Templates automatically adapt to mobile devices and tablets, and the administration environment works well on smaller screens. The service is therefore suitable for businesses that want to manage their website without maintaining a separate desktop-only administration workflow.

AI functions have become an important part of Webnode. The AI Website Builder can generate an initial website from a short description of the business or project. The AI Assistant can generate and improve text, create images, build pages and sections and assist with blog content. Webnode has also introduced AI Migration, designed to help transfer website content from another platform, together with an MCP Server for connecting compatible AI tools with Webnode projects.

Business-oriented features include forms, integrated website statistics, multilingual websites, membership areas and integrations with Google Analytics 4, Google Tag Manager, Google Search Console, Facebook Pixel and Google AdSense. SEO controls cover page titles, descriptions, custom URLs, 301 redirects, automatic sitemaps, keywords and image ALT attributes. Custom HTML can be inserted for third-party integrations, although unrestricted CSS editing and server-side application development are not part of the service.

The E-commerce system is suitable for small and medium online stores and includes products and variants, inventory management, CSV catalog import and export, product SEO settings, discount coupons, customizable checkout fields, shipping rules, international delivery, order editing, manual orders on higher subscriptions, automatic invoicing, customized transactional emails, analytics and conversion tracking.

Multi-currency functionality is available on higher-level subscriptions. Webnode does not add its own transaction percentage to store sales, although external payment processors still charge their normal processing fees. Store payment options can include PayPal, Stripe card payments, Klarna, Paytrail, bank transfer, cash, cash on delivery and payment upon pickup, depending on the customer's country.

Professional email is integrated with custom domains. Customers on suitable Premium subscriptions can create addresses such as name@yourdomain.com, use Webnode webmail or configure their mailbox in external email clients. The number of available mailboxes depends on the subscription, with higher plans providing substantially more accounts for companies and online stores.

Domain registration and management are also integrated directly into Webnode. The company supports numerous generic and country-code extensions, external domains and DNS management for records such as A, CNAME, MX and TXT. Domain privacy is available where the registry permits it. The first purchase of eligible Mini, Standard, Profi or Business subscriptions includes a one-year domain-registration benefit. Every Webnode website also receives an automatically managed free SSL certificate.

Additional business functions are available through integrations. Online appointment scheduling works with SimplyBook.me, while invoicing functionality can be connected with Billdu. These services expand Webnode beyond basic website creation and make the platform suitable for businesses that need booking, invoicing or customer-management functionality without deploying separate server applications.

Multilingual support is one of Webnode's stronger features. The platform and support environment are available in 24 languages, including English, Czech, Finnish, Spanish, Danish, German, French, Croatian, Italian, Latvian, Hungarian, Dutch, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Slovak, Swedish, Greek, Russian, Ukrainian, Bulgarian, Traditional Chinese and Japanese. English is fully supported. Premium websites can also operate in multiple languages, with the number of available language versions depending on the selected subscription.
