Webhuset is one of Norway’s long-established independent hosting providers, with roots going back to 1998, when Erik Windahl Olsen started the business in Skien using leased server capacity in the United States. The operation soon shifted toward Norwegian infrastructure, and its first local data-center environment was established around 2000. The present Webhuset AS company was incorporated in 2000 under organization number 981 532 848, while the hosting business itself dates from 1998.

Webhuset serves more than 25,000 customers and more than 40,000 websites, with a strong concentration on Norwegian individuals, developers, small businesses and medium-sized organizations. Webhuset AS is wholly owned by Webhuset Invest AS. Andreas Bakke is managing director, while founder Erik Windahl Olsen remains involved as chairman.

An important expansion came in 2012, when Webhuset acquired Rent a Rack (rentarack.no). The acquisition added an Oslo data-center operation and strengthened geographical redundancy between infrastructure in eastern and western Norway.

The service portfolio covers domain registration, Linux and Windows shared hosting, WordPress hosting, Cloud Server/VPS, professional email, Microsoft 365, website building, server backup, security, DNS, SSL certificates and partner/reseller services. Dedicated physical servers were previously an important part of the portfolio, while Cloud Server has become the primary current option for customers who need their own server environment.

Standard Web Hosting is available with both Linux and Windows environments. Accounts include free SSL/TLS certificates, daily backups retained for at least 14 days, FTP access, PHP, CGI, ASP where applicable, SSH on Linux, MySQL, Microsoft SQL Server and phpMyAdmin. DNS administration and domain forwarding are integrated into the service.

The hosting range starts with Web Hobby and continues through Web Pluss, Web Pro and Web Max. Storage ranges from 1 GB on the entry package to 10 GB, 50 GB and 200 GB on progressively larger plans. The lower tiers are suited to personal sites and small company websites, while the larger packages provide substantially more space for content-heavy projects and databases. Email hosting is handled as a separate service rather than automatically being included with every web-hosting plan.

WordPress AI combines normal WordPress hosting with an AI-assisted website creation process. The AI system can prepare the initial layout, pages and content from a business or project description, but the resulting site remains a conventional WordPress installation. Customers retain FTP, SSH, MySQL and phpMyAdmin access and can continue installing normal WordPress themes and plugins. Daily backup, SSL and a 30-day money-back guarantee are included.

This approach is useful for customers who want a faster starting point without becoming locked into a completely proprietary website platform. Once the initial site has been generated, normal WordPress administration and customization remain available.

The separate Nettsidebygger service is designed for customers who prefer a hosted drag-and-drop website builder instead of WordPress. It includes unlimited pages and storage, responsive templates, SEO functions, multilingual website support, free SSL and an integrated online-store option supporting PayPal and Stripe. A 14-day free trial provides access to the complete builder without requiring payment-card details.

For customers needing dedicated computing resources, Cloud Server is Webhuset’s VPS platform. Standard configurations begin with 1 GB RAM, 1 vCPU, 10 GB SSD storage and 1 TB traffic and extend to 32 GB RAM, 8 vCPU, 320 GB SSD storage and 4 TB traffic. Custom configurations can scale as high as 64 GB RAM, 16 CPUs and 500 GB storage.

Available operating systems include Rocky Linux, CentOS Stream, Debian, Ubuntu and Windows Server. Cloud servers can be rebooted, reinstalled, cloned and accessed through a direct console from the Customer Center. Snapshot functionality simplifies testing and recovery. Linux servers support SSH administration, while Windows systems can be administered over RDP.

Server security can be extended with firewalling and VLAN networking. Private VLANs make it possible to isolate database servers, application servers or backup systems from the public Internet, while firewall rules can restrict administrative services to selected IP addresses. These facilities make the VPS platform suitable for more complex multi-server installations as well as ordinary standalone virtual servers.

A separate server backup service is available for Linux and Windows. It uses AES-256 encryption, performs daily backups and retains recovery data for at least 14 days. Block-level incremental backups reduce the amount of data transferred after the first complete backup, while bare-metal restoration and Windows Volume Shadow Copy support make the service suitable for full server recovery.

Email hosting is available with mailbox capacities ranging from 1 GB to 20 GB. Accounts support IMAP, POP3 and SMTP, webmail, forwarding, autoresponders, aliases and mailing lists, together with spam and virus filtering. An unlimited number of individual email accounts can be created, with billing handled per mailbox.

Webhuset also supplies Microsoft 365, including Business Basic, Apps for Business, Business Standard and Business Premium, together with optional Microsoft Copilot services. Businesses can therefore consolidate domains, hosting, email and Microsoft licensing with the same Norwegian provider.

The Partner Program is intended for agencies, developers, consultants and IT companies that administer services on behalf of their own customers. Partners receive a dedicated management environment covering hosting, WordPress AI, Cloud Server, Microsoft 365 and other Webhuset services while the infrastructure and technical platform remain managed by Webhuset.

Another useful initiative is Webhuset Startup, aimed at young Norwegian businesses. Eligible AS and ENK companies less than one year old can apply for up to 10,000 NOK in services, potentially including a .no domain, hosting, professional email and Cloud Server resources. Support is awarded for one year and can be renewed following a new qualification assessment.

The commercial website is primarily in Norwegian, matching the company’s strong domestic focus. The Customer Center itself supports both Norwegian and English. Products are priced in Norwegian kroner (NOK).
