Variomedia AG is a long-established German domain registrar and web hosting provider headquartered in Potsdam. The company was founded in 2000 by Marten Lehmann and Justus Pilgrim, with August 14, 2000 marking the registration of the original Variomedia IT-Service GmbH. The business later became an Aktiengesellschaft, and both founders remain members of the management board.

Variomedia is particularly suitable for customers who want domains and hosting under German jurisdiction while avoiding the very large mass-market hosting groups. Its portfolio covers domain registration, Linux shared hosting, managed dedicated hosting, reseller hosting, email hosting, groupware, DNS, SSL certificates, hosted collaboration applications and migration services. Its server products concentrate mainly on managed environments where administration, security updates, backups and maintenance remain the provider's responsibility.

Domain registration is one of Variomedia's strongest areas. The company is a DENIC member and an ICANN-accredited registrar, with a catalog covering more than 700 TLDs. Customers can manage traditional extensions, country-code domains, industry-specific namespaces and newer generic extensions from the same account. DNS management supports A, AAAA, ALIAS, CAA, CNAME, MX, NAPTR, NS, PTR, SRV, TLSA and TXT records, together with DNSSEC, DynDNS and API access. The Anycast DNS infrastructure distributes DNS service across multiple international locations, improving resilience and response times. Integrations are also available for services including Cloudflare and AWS Route 53.

The Easy.Hosting range handles conventional Linux shared hosting. Easy.A through Easy.D provide between 10 GB and 40 GB of SSD storage, with prices starting at €3 per month. Depending on the package, customers receive one to four domains, databases, email accounts, SSH, SFTP, FTP, cron jobs, IPv6, HTTP/2 and TLS 1.3.

PHP support is particularly flexible, with versions ranging from older PHP 5.6 branches through modern PHP 8.x releases. Different domains and subdomains can use different PHP versions within the same account, which is useful for developers maintaining both legacy and current applications. Variomedia also maintains extended security support for several obsolete PHP branches, although current supported PHP releases remain the more appropriate option for new projects.

The hosting environment also supports Python, Perl, Ruby and Node.js. MySQL and MariaDB are available in multiple versions, making the platform suitable for applications with specific compatibility requirements. WordPress, Joomla, Drupal, TYPO3 and Contao can be operated on the platform, alongside e-commerce applications such as WooCommerce, Shopware and PrestaShop. The larger Pro packages also include additional monitoring capabilities and application environments for Ruby on Rails, Python WSGI and Node.js. These packages work well for companies that need significantly more resources than ordinary shared hosting but still prefer a managed environment rather than administering the operating system themselves.

Reseller Hosting is another important part of the service portfolio. Reseller.DNS is available without a monthly charge, while Reseller.Hosting starts at €20 per month with shared hosting resources. Dedicated.100 and Dedicated.500 move resellers onto managed dedicated resources at €75 and €150 per month respectively. Dedicated.100 provides four CPU cores and 8 GB RAM, while Dedicated.500 provides eight CPU cores and 16 GB RAM.

Reseller accounts support large customer and domain portfolios, unlimited data transfer and virtual nameservers. A neutral securehost.de hostname can be used, while resellers can also operate services through their own provider domain. This makes the platform practical for agencies and hosting businesses that require a white-label environment without maintaining their own server infrastructure.

Email services can be ordered independently of web hosting. The Basic mail package is included with a domain and provides a 2 GB mailbox, while Mail.Plus increases this to five 2 GB mailboxes for €1 per month. IMAP, POP3, SMTP, encrypted connections, webmail, server-side Sieve filtering and mobile synchronization are supported. Mailboxes can be expanded substantially when additional storage is required, while spam protection is handled with eXpurgate technology.

For companies that need collaboration tools, Open-Xchange adds calendars, contacts, tasks, file storage and synchronization. Mail.Pro adds sharing and OX Drive, while Mail.Premium also includes OX Documents. GoBD-compliant business email archiving is hosted on Variomedia infrastructure in Berlin, with archive packages beginning at €3 per mailbox/month including 10 GB of archive storage.

SSL support ranges from automatically managed Let's Encrypt certificates to commercial DV, OV, wildcard and EV certificates from Sectigo. Let's Encrypt certificates are also available separately for hosting accounts, while several hosting packages already include certificate support. Automated DNS challenges and certificate lifecycle management simplify deployment across larger domain portfolios.
