united-domains is a long-established German domain registrar and hosting provider founded in August 2000 in Starnberg, Bavaria. Florian Huber, Alexander Helm, Markus Eggensperger, Johann Hermann and Nikolai Tiedemann founded the business after Huber had already established the domain-recht.de project in 1999. The company reached profitability in 2002, established united-domains Reselling GmbH in 2003 and became part of the 1&1 corporate group in 2008. Today the business operates as united-domains GmbH under IONOS Group SE.

The company has grown into one of Germany's established domain specialists, with more than 300,000 customers and approximately 1.6 million domains under management. Its 25th-anniversary information refers to a selection exceeding 1,200 domain extensions, while the normal customer-facing catalog provides access to more than 1,000 extensions. Domains remain the core business, complemented by hosting, email, WordPress, SSL and website-building services rather than VPS, dedicated-server or colocation infrastructure.

The current portfolio covers Domain Registration, Shared Web Hosting, Managed WordPress Hosting, Email Hosting, Website Builder, SSL Certificates, DNS Management and domain-security services. Additional tools are available for customers managing larger domain portfolios, including DNS automation, enhanced domain protection and business-oriented brand-protection services.

Domain management is one of the stronger aspects of the platform. Customers can administer DNS records, subdomains, redirects and email forwarding from the same account used for registrations. Two-factor authentication provides additional account protection, while Whois privacy is available where the relevant registry permits it. DNS uses a globally distributed Anycast architecture, reducing dependence on a single geographical location and providing a more resilient authoritative DNS setup. DDoS protection is integrated into the nameserver infrastructure, and an API is available for customers who need to automate DNS changes.

The Shared Web Hosting range, sold as Webspace, is Linux-based and aimed at personal websites, business sites and PHP applications. Smaller configurations begin with around 5 GB of storage, support several connected domains and provide SSD-backed databases. Current PHP versions are available with up to 768 MB PHP memory, depending on the package, together with HTTP/2, SFTP access and SSL certificates for connected domains.

Database administration is handled through phpMyAdmin, while the larger Webspace L configuration adds SSH shell access for users needing command-line administration. SFTP is available for file transfers, making the service more suitable for customers who prefer managing their own site files instead of relying entirely on a site builder. DDoS protection is included at the hosting layer as well.

The hosting range is therefore better suited to conventional websites and PHP/MySQL applications than to customers needing root access, custom operating systems or isolated virtual-server resources. VPS and dedicated-server products are not part of the standard united-domains retail catalog.

Managed WordPress Hosting has become a much more prominent part of the product range. Storage allocations extend from roughly 20 GB to 75 GB depending on the selected package. The managed environment covers WordPress core maintenance, automatic theme and plugin updates, server administration, security scanning and DDoS protection.

Daily security scans are included, while WordPress maintenance is handled without requiring the customer to administer the underlying server. The platform also incorporates AI-assisted tools for website creation, copy generation and image-related tasks. Higher packages provide more resources and broader AI allowances.

WordPress can be combined with WooCommerce for smaller online stores, giving the managed service a path from ordinary company websites to basic e-commerce projects. For customers primarily interested in WordPress rather than generic PHP hosting, the managed environment removes considerably more technical administration than standard Webspace.

Managed WordPress carries a stated 99.98% uptime figure. This is an important distinction because the guarantee applies specifically to that hosting environment rather than serving as a single universal uptime commitment for every united-domains product.

The Email Hosting range works with customer-owned domains and can be purchased independently from web hosting. Mail S starts with a single mailbox, Mail M increases this to ten mailboxes, and Mail L provides twenty. Larger Mail XL configurations are intended for businesses requiring substantially more accounts.

Email can be accessed through webmail or conventional mail applications using IMAP and SMTP. TLS encryption, spam filtering, blacklists and whitelists are part of the service. Contacts and calendar functionality are also integrated into the webmail environment. Mail data is hosted in Germany, an important consideration for German and European organizations that prefer domestic data residency.

The Website Builder has evolved well beyond the simpler page-building products traditionally associated with domain registrars. It combines responsive templates, SSL, domain integration, forms, blogs, image galleries, SEO functions and multilingual capabilities with AI-assisted content creation.

AI functions can help generate an initial website, individual page sections, text and images. Additional tools assist with translation, SEO text, image recognition, alternative text and content optimization. This makes the builder particularly suitable for customers who want to publish a professional small-business site without manually installing and maintaining a CMS.

SSL support is tightly integrated across the product range. Webspace, Managed WordPress and Website Builder packages include SSL for the hosted domains, while separate SSL Certificates remain available for domains or servers hosted elsewhere. Wildcard certificate options are also available when several subdomains need to be protected.

An important platform consolidation took place during 2025. Customers previously using the uniteddomains.com environment were migrated to the main united-domains.de platform, with the transition completed around December 2025. This brought the customer base onto a more unified service and account-management environment.

The customer Portfolio can be switched to English, although the main united-domains.de storefront remains primarily German. International customers can therefore administer an account in English, but the buying and information experience is still more German-oriented than that of a fully multilingual international host.

The retail website itself is modern and works well on current desktop and mobile screens. Prices are mainly shown in EUR, with German consumer pricing generally including 19% VAT.
