uCoz is a hosted website builder and modular content management platform launched in 2005 by Evgeniy Kurt, Andrey Vladimirtsev and Yuri Yevtukhov. It later became the central service within uKit Group, a broader software company operating several website-building, e-commerce, form, marketing and online business products.

The platform has remained active for more than two decades and supports approximately 1.2 million active websites. This long history has produced a system that differs considerably from simplified modern website builders. uCoz combines website creation, hosting, content management, user administration and developer tools within one integrated environment.

This is not conventional shared hosting with cPanel, nor does uCoz provide VPS, dedicated servers or server-level administrative access. Websites operate directly inside the proprietary uCoz platform, where hosting resources, CMS modules, templates, domains, users and files are managed from the same account.

A permanent free package is available for users who want to create a website on a uCoz subdomain or connect an existing custom domain. It includes 400 MB of initial storage, FTP access, responsive templates, backups, visual editing and access to the main CMS modules. Free websites include uCoz branding and have lower storage, backup and support limits than paid accounts.

The modular architecture is one of the platform’s strongest characteristics. Customers can activate only the components needed for a particular project, including site pages, news, blogs, forums, online shops, file catalogs, link directories, classified advertisements, photo albums, video sections, polls, guestbooks, frequently asked questions, contact forms, site search, visitor statistics, user accounts, online tests and achievement systems.

This structure works particularly well for community websites, educational projects, clubs, fan sites, download portals, membership platforms, directories and content-heavy resources. Individual modules can be enabled, disabled or configured separately without rebuilding the entire website.

User administration is more advanced than on many entry-level site builders. Administrators can create multiple user groups, define access rights, moderate submissions and control who may view, add, edit or delete content. Separate permissions can be applied to different modules and website sections.

Template customization is also unusually flexible for a hosted platform. Customers can use ready-made responsive designs, work through the visual editor or directly modify HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Menus, global blocks, forms, widgets, breadcrumbs and page structures can be adapted to the requirements of the project.

FTP access is included, although uCoz remains a managed website platform rather than unrestricted file storage. Files and scripts are intended to support websites operating inside the uCoz environment.

Higher packages support PHP 8, Node.js, Python, MySQL databases and Cron jobs. These features offer considerably more development flexibility than a typical closed website builder. However, the account still does not provide root access, operating-system control or the portability of an ordinary hosting server.

The Online Shop module supports physical products, digital downloads and services. Its functions include unlimited products and categories, product variations, inventory control, order processing, discount codes, promotional campaigns, currency configuration, employee permissions and spreadsheet-based importing.

Payment options for online stores include services such as PayPal, Stripe, 2Checkout, LiqPay, ROBOKASSA, Unitpay, Wallet One, FreeKassa, Paymaster and PagSeguro. Gateway availability depends on the merchant’s location, chosen currency and payment-provider requirements.

A dedicated Subscriptions and Plans module supports recurring memberships and paid-access projects. It can handle one-time payments, automatic renewals, free trials, protected content, subscriber administration, refunds, tariff plans and automated customer notifications.

Subscription reporting includes metrics such as monthly recurring revenue and customer churn. A single project can contain up to 50 active subscription tariffs, making the module suitable for online courses, paid communities, premium content and membership websites.

Artificial-intelligence functions have become an important part of the current platform. AI Code can generate or modify HTML, CSS and JavaScript directly inside the template editor. It is included with the Optimal, Shop and Maximal packages.

The AI Content system assists with article titles, page text, tags, metadata and images for modules such as News and Blog. This reduces the amount of manual work required when maintaining frequently updated content websites.

The newer MCP integration allows compatible AI applications and development environments to interact with templates, forms, menus, files, global blocks and SEO settings through an API token. MCP access is also available with free accounts and includes validation and backup protections before changes are applied.

The uCoz API covers users, pages, news, blogs, forums, directories, classified advertisements, photo galleries, video, downloadable files, guestbooks, online shops and subscriptions. Developers can therefore connect external systems or automate repetitive website-management tasks.

A separate Telegram Shop service creates online stores that operate directly inside Telegram as mini applications. It supports physical and digital products, services, product variations, delivery configuration, online payments, statistics and catalog importing or synchronization. Custom Telegram bots can also be developed for projects requiring specialized workflows.

The wider corporate group includes uKit, a simpler visual website builder intended mainly for small businesses, together with uCalc, uShop, WebAsk, RuSender and stepFORM. uCoz remains the group’s more technically flexible platform, especially for projects that require modules, user communities, custom templates or direct code access.

The company received an investment from Digital Sky Technologies in 2007. The transaction exceeded $3 million for approximately 30% of the business, based on a company valuation of around $10 million. Compubyte Limited later consolidated ownership in 2014, and the business now operates within the uKit Group structure.

uCoz has maintained an international presence with approximately 16 language versions. Supported localization has included English, Russian, German, Spanish, French, Hungarian, Ukrainian, Arabic, Swedish, Romanian, Polish, Armenian, Portuguese, Turkish and Hebrew.

English is fully supported on the international website, in the core platform and in the legal documentation. Some regional versions, community sections and older help resources retain a more traditional portal-style design.

The main website, pricing presentation and AI sections use a modern responsive layout. Parts of the help center, forum and regional network still reflect the platform’s long operating history. Websites created with uCoz can nevertheless use responsive templates and dedicated mobile layouts.
