📄 Editorial Review
Telekom Romania has a more complicated background than a conventional hosting provider because web hosting formed only one part of a much larger Romanian telecommunications, cloud and IT operation. The Telekom Romania brand was launched on September 13, 2014, when Romtelecom and COSMOTE Romania adopted the Telekom commercial identity. The hosting operation itself was considerably older, with Romtelecom already providing BeOnline web hosting, reseller hosting and domain services before the rebranding. The present company structure is very different. telekom.ro is no longer an active web-hosting storefront, and new customers cannot order the former BeOnline, reseller, VPS or enterprise hosting services through it. The domain now leads into the former Telekom mobile operation during its integration with Vodafone.
Vodafone Romania S.A. (vodafone.ro) acquired Telekom Romania Mobile Communications on October 1, 2025 in a transaction valued at €30 million. The two companies subsequently merged at the end of June 30, 2026, with Vodafone assuming the rights and obligations of Telekom Romania Mobile Communications. From July 1, 2026, Vodafone became the service provider for customers remaining on the Telekom mobile network.
The web-hosting, cloud and data-center business followed a different corporate path. These activities belonged primarily to Telekom Romania Communications S.A., the former fixed-network company. On September 30, 2021, OTE completed the sale of its 54% interest in Telekom Romania Communications to Orange Romania for €295.6 million. The historical hosting and enterprise infrastructure business therefore should not be confused with the present Vodafone-operated telekom.ro service.
Before that separation, Telekom Romania had a substantial hosting and infrastructure portfolio. It covered Shared Web Hosting, Reseller Hosting, Domain Registration, hosted email, DNS management, website creation, VPS, Virtual Data Center, enterprise Cloud/IaaS, Colocation, storage, backup, disaster recovery, dedicated infrastructure resources and managed IT services.
The New BeOnline shared-hosting family was aimed mainly at Romanian companies and organizations. Earlier configurations included Start, Plus, Standard and Advanced packages, with resources scaling from small informational websites to more capable business sites. Storage allocations ranged from 100 MB at the low end to 2,000 MB for Advanced configurations, while larger packages also increased email and database capacity.
The entry packages concentrated on basic hosting and email, while higher configurations added technologies such as PHP, ASP and MySQL. The service included a domain, unlimited subdomains and FTP accounts, unlimited traffic, DNS management, website-building functions, webmail and POP3 email access.
A domain could be included with a hosting subscription. Supported extensions included .ro, .eu, .com, .info, .net, .org and .biz. The domain arrangement had an important contractual detail: a free domain initially remained under Telekom's right of use unless ownership was transferred to the customer. A customer wanting to keep the domain after cancelling hosting had to request the transfer and pay the applicable transfer charge.
The Reseller Hosting platform was more flexible and better suited to agencies or companies hosting sites for their own customers. Packages ranged from S through M, L, XL and XXL to VIP. Entry configurations supported 10 domains and 4 GB of storage, while the VIP package increased capacity to 50 GB and removed the fixed domain-count limit. Traffic, subdomains, FTP accounts, email accounts and databases were unlimited within the overall limitations of the selected package.
Resellers received the tools needed to create their own hosting packages and administer customer accounts, making this considerably more capable than the standard BeOnline shared-hosting environment.
At the enterprise level, Telekom Romania operated infrastructure that went far beyond conventional website hosting. Virtual Private Server and Virtual Data Center solutions were available alongside larger IaaS environments, with geographically distributed computing infrastructure in Bucharest and Brașov. A 2015 cloud deployment used VCE Vblock infrastructure and achieved Cisco Powered Cloud Service certification for its IaaS platform.
These cloud services could accommodate anything from an individual virtual machine to larger ERP, CRM, e-commerce, backup and disaster-recovery environments. Geographic distribution also made them suitable for business-continuity configurations where workloads or recovery infrastructure needed to remain in separate locations.
The Hosting Data Center operation combined physical colocation with dedicated hardware and software resources, connectivity and managed infrastructure. Shared cloud environments were built around VMware technology, and the cloud platform obtained VMware Cloud Verified status in 2020.
This placed Telekom Romania in a very different category from a small shared-hosting supplier. The company could serve a basic business website through BeOnline while also supporting enterprise customers requiring racks, virtualized infrastructure, backup systems and geographically separated disaster-recovery environments.
The shared-hosting contract was comparatively formal. New BeOnline normally started with a one-year service period and automatically renewed for subsequent one-year periods unless cancellation was requested at least 30 days before renewal. Service activation was normally completed within 24 hours after purchase, or on the following working day when the activation deadline fell on a non-working day.
Today these hosting products are historical services rather than an active catalog. telekom.ro concentrates on the remaining Telekom mobile customer base and its migration into Vodafone. The main customer interface is in Romanian, while some older corporate information remains available in English. There is no current multilingual hosting storefront from which a new web-hosting customer can purchase these products.
