*📜 Plan description

Setup fee: EUR 19. Starter is a single-server colocation package for EUR 41 per month. It provides one rack unit in a standard 19-inch rack, one IPv4 address, 1,000 GB of monthly traffic, 150 watts of included power consumption, and four remote or staff-assisted resets. Monitoring is not included. An additional rack unit costs EUR 6, and each additional 50 watts of power for a colocated server is listed at EUR 8 per month. Traffic beyond the included 1 TB is charged at EUR 7.99 per TB for 1 to 10 TB, EUR 6.99 per TB for 10 to 20 TB, and EUR 5.99 per TB from 21 TB. The plan is intended for a conventional 1U server whose owner can manage the operating system and applications independently and only needs secure rack space, power, connectivity, an IP address, and a limited reset allowance. The server is installed in Cologne, and the minimum contract term can be four weeks.

Surfplanet operates two interconnected data centers in Cologne-Muelheim, Germany. The company has provided hosting and Internet services since 1997, became Surfplanet GmbH in 2002, opened its own Cologne facility in 2004, and added a separate tower-colocation area in 2009. Authorized customers receive 24/7 physical access. Security combines logged RFID cards, fingerprint authentication, rack locks, video surveillance, door alarms, motion detection, and optional cages. Fire protection uses early detection, F90-rated rooms, direct alarm forwarding to the Cologne fire brigade, and argon-gas suppression. Five redundant climate cabinets maintain approximately 21 to 24 C and monitored humidity, with continuous supervision and partial free cooling. Three independent fiber routes connect several carriers, including NetCologne, Global Crossing, Level 3, and Deutsche Telekom. The stated capacity is 6 x 10 Gbit/s, BGP provides automatic failover, and a 2.5 Gbit/s radio path supports emergency operation. Power is protected by online UPS systems, batteries, and diesel generation, with zero-second switching and fuel for about 72 hours at full load. Electricity is stated as 100 percent CO2-neutral and nuclear-free. Guaranteed availability is 99.9 percent for the network and 99.99 percent for power. Bandwidth is provided without overbooking or fair-use limits. The minimum contract term can be four weeks. Surfplanet has been ISO/IEC 27001 certified since 2022 and updated to ISO/IEC 27001:2022 in 2025. Support is available by email, telephone, and contact form. Prices include German VAT.

📄 Editorial Review

Surfplanet GmbH is a German hosting, network and colocation provider based in Cologne. The company was founded in 1997 by André Wagner and Elmar Altmeyer, initially concentrating on web hosting and internet-access services. It became Surfplanet GmbH in 2002, when the business expanded into server housing, server hosting, internet telephony, technical consulting, support and routing services.

A major step followed in 2004 with the opening of the company’s own data center in Cologne. Surfplanet continued expanding its colocation activities and added a separate data-center area for tower-server housing in 2009. The company is currently managed by Elmar Altmeyer and Carlos Santos.

Surfplanet is primarily a Colocation Hosting provider rather than a mass-market shared-hosting company. Its services are particularly suitable for businesses in Cologne and the surrounding region that want to relocate physical servers from an office or private server room while retaining convenient access to their equipment.

The Serverhousing range accommodates standard rack servers and tower systems. The Starter package provides space for one 1U server, one IP address, 1 TB of monthly traffic, 150 watts of included power and four resets. Tower Starter provides similar resources for tower-format hardware. The Profi alternatives increase the included traffic to 2 TB and power allowance to 200 watts while adding monitoring and a web-based reset function.

The Rackhousing service covers both half-rack and full-rack deployments. A half rack includes 22 usable rack units, while the full-rack option includes 44 usable units. Customers can select a metered traffic package or a 100 Mbit/s flat-rate connection. Redundant A/B power feeds, RIPE-compliant IP allocation and round-the-clock physical access are included.

Surfplanet also maintains a small Shared Hosting range under its Webspace product line. The Starter package provides 200 MB of storage, 1 TB of monthly traffic, 20 POP3 or IMAP email accounts and five MySQL databases. The Profi package increases the allocation to 500 MB of storage, 2 TB of traffic, 100 email accounts and ten MySQL databases. Both packages support PHP, Perl and Plesk administration.

These shared-hosting plans are appropriate for small company websites, basic email hosting and older lightweight applications. The storage allowances are extremely limited for modern WordPress installations, online stores or media-heavy websites, making Surfplanet considerably stronger in physical infrastructure than in general-purpose shared hosting.

Domain Registration covers common extensions such as .de, .com, .net, .org, .at, .info and .biz. Surfplanet acts as an intermediary between customers and the relevant domain registries, while availability and current prices are handled through the company’s contact and ordering process.

A more unusual service is the connection of colocated equipment to satellite and terrestrial antenna systems. Reception options include Eutelsat at 13° East and several Astra positions, including 19.2°, 23.5° and 28.2° East. DVB-T and FM radio antenna connections can also be arranged. This infrastructure is useful for broadcasting, signal monitoring, media processing and other specialized applications rarely supported by conventional hosting providers.

Additional services include port monitoring, physical remote-hands assistance, copper and fiber cross-connects, FTP backup capacity, web resetters, extra Ethernet ports, additional power capacity, internal cabling and customized antenna connections.

Surfplanet has held ISO/IEC 27001 certification since February 28, 2022. Its information-security management system was migrated to ISO/IEC 27001:2022 in 2025, strengthening the provider’s suitability for business customers that require formal security processes and documented operational controls.

The company operates in German, and prices are shown in EUR. The website has an older, compact design and a traditional ordering process. Some product characteristics, including very small webspace quotas and ISDN-related extras, reflect the company’s long operating history. The overall service is better suited to customers seeking direct technical contact and customized infrastructure than those expecting an automated cloud dashboard.
