StrongVPN is an American virtual private network provider operated by Strong Technology, LLC and currently owned by Ziff Davis (ziffdavis.com). The company’s history dates back to 1994, when its original business began in South Lake Tahoe, California, selling personal computers. It later expanded into dial-up internet access through California.net, dedicated servers, colocation services and, eventually, encrypted internet connectivity.

The StrongVPN service was launched in 2005, giving it a considerably longer operating history than many consumer VPN brands. In April 2019, J2 Global acquired the VPN businesses associated with StrongVPN, IPVanish and Encrypt.me from StackPath. J2 Global subsequently adopted the Ziff Davis corporate name, placing StrongVPN within a larger international technology and digital-media group.

StrongVPN is now focused entirely on consumer privacy and secure internet access rather than traditional web hosting. Shared hosting, VPS plans, reseller hosting, dedicated servers, domain registration, website builders and hosted email are no longer part of the current product range. Dedicated server and colocation services belong to the company’s earlier business history.

Every subscription combines VPN access, StrongDNS and 3 GB of global eSIM data. StrongDNS provides SmartDNS functionality for televisions, streaming devices, game consoles and other equipment that cannot run a complete VPN application. The included eSIM allowance adds a small amount of international mobile data for customers traveling abroad.

Applications are available for Windows, macOS, Android and iOS. Manual installation and configuration options extend compatibility to Linux, ChromeOS, Amazon Fire TV, Fire TV Stick, Apple TV, Kodi, smart televisions, Synology devices, pfSense, MikroTik, DD-WRT, OpenWRT and compatible VPN routers.

The service can be installed on an unlimited number of personal devices, with up to 12 simultaneous VPN connections. This is enough for a household using several computers, smartphones, tablets, televisions and streaming devices at the same time. The account remains licensed to one customer and is intended for that customer’s own devices rather than unrestricted sharing between unrelated users.

Protocol support includes WireGuard, IKEv2, OpenVPN and IPSec. WireGuard is the most practical option for everyday use because it combines modern encryption, high performance and relatively low battery consumption. IKEv2 is especially useful on mobile devices because MOBIKE support helps maintain the VPN connection when switching between Wi-Fi and cellular networks.

OpenVPN is available through both TCP and UDP connections, with several selectable ports. The additional OpenVPN Scramble mode disguises recognizable OpenVPN traffic and can improve connectivity on networks that attempt to identify or restrict VPN protocols. IPSec remains available mainly for compatibility with older equipment and manual configurations.

StrongVPN follows a zero-traffic-logging policy. Browsing activity, VPN traffic, destination history and connection content are not retained while a customer uses the service. Account registration still requires an email address and payment method, while card transactions can also require the customer’s name and billing address.

Current subscriptions use shared VPN addresses. Multiple customers connect through the same public IP address, making individual activity more difficult to associate with one specific account. Dedicated IP packages existed in earlier StrongVPN product generations, but these are no longer part of the standard consumer subscription.

The main service is available in English, with a separate Chinese-language section and Simplified Chinese support documentation. Specialized instructions are available for China and other countries where VPN protocols are commonly filtered or restricted. Product prices are displayed in US dollars.

The main interface is modern and works well on desktop and mobile screens. Some older service information still remains mixed with the current product catalog, particularly historical server totals, PPTP references, dedicated-IP information and earlier SugarSync bundle details.
