STRATO is a large German hosting provider operated by STRATO GmbH from Berlin. Marc Alexander Ullrich and Norbert Stangl founded the business in 1997 around a simple idea: domain registration and website publishing should be affordable without demanding deep technical knowledge. STRATO opened an owned data center in Karlsruhe in 2002 and another in Berlin in 2003. It is now part of IONOS Group SE. Roughly 350 employees support more than two million customer contracts, over four million managed domains, and more than 100,000 physical and virtual servers. That scale gives customers a substantial product ecosystem, although the terms of each product remain more important than the size of the brand.

The domain registration catalog spans more than 300 extensions and offers DNS and DynDNS management. Customers can combine a domain with shared web hosting, WordPress hosting, email hosting, or a managed online store. Developers and businesses needing operating-system control can move to Linux VPS, Windows VPS, Linux dedicated servers, or Windows dedicated servers. The SmartWebsite builder and SmartWebshop provide more guided site and ecommerce workflows, while HiDrive is a separate cloud-storage and file-sharing service. Design assistance, security tools, and backup products add to the portfolio, but they do not make every base plan fully managed.

The shared-hosting tiers provide SSD webspace, included domains and SSL certificates, mailboxes, databases, and unmetered traffic. WordPress tiers trade some of the general-hosting storage allowance for automatic WordPress maintenance and, on higher tiers, AI content tools; the ecommerce tier adds WooCommerce. VPS plans use KVM and give customers root or administrator access, one IPv4 address, IPv6, and a network port up to 1 Gbps. Dedicated servers come in Intel and AMD configurations with HDD, SSD, or NVMe options and RAID choices. These are distinct service models: a drag-and-drop builder does not allow server administration, and root access does not mean the provider handles application maintenance.

The German storefront uses euros and includes VAT in its displayed prices. STRATO also has localized storefronts for the Netherlands, Spain, the United Kingdom, France, and Sweden, giving the group German, Dutch, Spanish, English, French, and Swedish customer-facing versions. Product selections and tax treatment can differ between countries; Spanish prices, for example, are displayed without VAT. A customer outside Germany should compare the relevant local order form rather than relying on a German offer to apply everywhere.
