Squarespace is one of the best-known all-in-one website platforms, combining managed cloud hosting, website creation, ecommerce, domains, online payments, scheduling, marketing, professional email integrations, analytics, and business-management tools in a single ecosystem. The company was founded in 2003 by Anthony Casalena while he was a student at the University of Maryland and has grown from a small website-building project into a major international web services business.

Squarespace became privately held in October 2024, when funds advised by Permira (permira.com) completed an acquisition valued at approximately $7.2 billion. Founder Anthony Casalena remained CEO and Board Chairman and retained a significant ownership position following the transaction.

Squarespace differs considerably from conventional shared hosting. Customers do not receive a traditional hosting account built around disk quotas, PHP configuration, MySQL databases, FTP administration, or server-level access. Hosting is fully managed within the platform, with Squarespace handling the software environment, infrastructure, maintenance, security, scaling, and availability. VPS, dedicated servers, reseller hosting, and colocation are not part of the product range.

The main website subscriptions are Basic, Core, Plus, and Advanced, replacing the older Personal, Business, Commerce Basic, and Commerce Advanced structure. Every main plan combines hosting with the visual website builder, responsive templates, SSL security, unlimited bandwidth, analytics, SEO functions, customer accounts, donations, and ecommerce capabilities.

Basic is designed for smaller websites and smaller teams and supports up to two contributors. It includes hosted video capacity and full website-building functionality, while ecommerce transactions and digital-content sales carry additional Squarespace transaction fees.

Core is better suited to growing businesses and online stores. It removes the regular Squarespace commerce transaction fee, reduces the digital-product fee, supports unlimited contributors, increases hosted video capacity, and adds custom code, code injection, more advanced integrations, commerce analytics, promotional tools, shipping functions, Google Shopping, and automatic discounts.

Plus expands video capacity further and lowers digital-content transaction fees, while Advanced provides the broadest commerce capabilities, unlimited hosted video, and eliminates the Squarespace digital-content transaction fee.

Website creation remains one of the main strengths of the service. The visual editing environment combines professional templates with responsive layouts, global styling, drag-and-drop content editing, galleries, blogging, portfolios, forms, SEO controls, multimedia support, analytics, and AI-assisted website creation. Blueprint AI and other design-assistance tools can generate an initial layout and content direction while leaving full visual editing available afterward.

The Online Store / Ecommerce platform supports physical products, services, digital goods, memberships, courses, subscriptions, gift cards, customer accounts, discounts, shipping, product reviews, abandoned-cart recovery, invoices, payment links, and social-commerce integrations. Squarespace Payments brings payment administration directly into the account interface, while external payment options can also be available depending on the business location and configuration.

Domains have become a major part of the Squarespace business. The company agreed to acquire Google Domains assets in 2023, covering approximately 10 million domains belonging to millions of customers, and completed the acquisition on September 7, 2023. Migration of the Google Domains portfolio was subsequently completed. Squarespace operates as an ICANN-accredited registrar and supports more than 400 domain extensions.

Domain services include WHOIS privacy, DNS management, DNSSEC, forwarding, domain parking, SSL/TLS integration, and email forwarding. Domains can be maintained independently without purchasing a Squarespace website, which makes the registrar service useful even for customers hosting elsewhere.

Professional email is integrated through Google Workspace, while Squarespace also offers Essential Email by Titan in supported markets. Eligible higher-tier website subscriptions can include a Google Workspace Business Starter inbox for the first year.

Email Campaigns adds newsletter creation, subscriber management, campaign templates, automation, segmentation, and reporting. Squarespace also provides SMS marketing, SEO and AI Visibility tools, contact management, promotional pop-ups, lead-generation functions, and integrated website analytics.

Acuity Scheduling became part of Squarespace in 2019 and extends the platform into appointment-based businesses. It handles appointments, classes, calendars, availability, online booking, and client scheduling while continuing to operate as a recognizable standalone product within the wider Squarespace ecosystem.

Additional tools cover invoicing, project management, donations, memberships, digital products, financial services, Squarespace Payments, Balance, Capital, premium business services, and professional programs for designers and agencies.

Squarespace supports multiple languages across its platform, including English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, and Korean. Product pricing and billing also support multiple currencies depending on customer location. The interface is modern, responsive, and designed for both desktop and mobile use.
