Sonassi is a specialist UK eCommerce hosting provider founded in 2008 by Ben Lessani, the same year Magento was launched. The company developed around high-performance Magento hosting rather than general-purpose shared hosting, gradually building a technically sophisticated platform for online stores where application performance, security and availability have a direct impact on revenue.

In November 2017, Sonassi was acquired by Iomart Group, bringing the Magento specialist into a much larger UK cloud, network and data-center organization. Sonassi continues as a distinct eCommerce hosting operation, while its customer-facing legal entity is Iomart Managed Services Limited.

The core product is Magento / Adobe Commerce Hosting based on Sonassi's proprietary MageStack platform. This is very different from conventional shared hosting. MageStack combines dedicated physical resources, service isolation, automated monitoring, caching, load balancing and managed infrastructure within an environment built specifically for demanding commerce applications. The platform has also been extended to support OroCommerce.

MageStack includes root SSH access, container isolation, local and off-site backups, email and SMS monitoring, high-availability storage, redundant power and networking, firewall protection and managed hardware replacement. The hosting architecture gives developers considerably more control than a fully closed SaaS commerce platform while still retaining the operational benefits of managed infrastructure.

Performance optimization is one of the strongest parts of the service. MageStack integrates Varnish, Redis, Memcache and SOLR, together with optimized PHP and database configurations. Its architecture can combine multiple servers, shared storage and Layer 7 load balancing, allowing resources to scale vertically or horizontally as a store grows.

High-availability configurations add replication between redundant servers and automatic service failover. In suitable paired-server configurations, workloads can transfer to a secondary system following a hardware problem, reducing the effect of an individual server failure on the store.

Security is closely integrated into the platform. MageStack combines service isolation, firewalling, intrusion detection, denial-of-service filtering, continuous logging and VPN-protected administration. HTTP and HTTPS can remain the principal Internet-facing services, while administrative access can be restricted through IPSEC or OpenVPN connections. This architecture is particularly relevant to stores handling customer, payment and order information.

Sonassi also provides Dedicated Magento Hosting for stores needing predictable CPU, memory and storage resources. Configurations range from smaller multi-core servers through high-capacity systems with considerably more processor cores and hundreds of gigabytes of RAM. Hardware RAID options include RAID 1, RAID 10 and RAID 6, while 100 Mbps and 1 Gbps networking are available depending on configuration.

The infrastructure can be expanded by adding additional nodes rather than forcing customers to migrate everything onto a single larger machine. This makes Sonassi especially suitable for established Magento stores, agencies managing large commerce deployments and retailers expecting substantial traffic or transaction volumes.

Sonassi is therefore not a conventional low-cost hosting provider. Shared hosting, inexpensive generic VPS plans and entry-level website packages are not its focus. Its service is aimed much more directly at businesses where Magento or Adobe Commerce is an important commercial platform and where specialist application support justifies a substantially higher hosting budget.
