📄 Editorial Review

SolNet is a long-established Swiss Internet, hosting, telecommunications, and network-services provider operated by BSE Software GmbH from Solothurn, Switzerland. The business dates back to 1996, giving it roughly three decades of experience in Swiss Internet infrastructure. BSE Software GmbH was entered in the Swiss commercial register on February 22, 1996, under registration number CH-251.4.000.047-1 and UID/VAT number CHE-108.432.208.

Markus Binz founded and owns BSE Software GmbH. The company remained independently controlled while developing from a regional Internet provider into a broader Swiss infrastructure operator. An important management change followed in 2024, when Erich Hohermuth assumed operational management on May 1 and became CEO of SolNet and data11.

SolNet's development reflects the evolution of the Swiss Internet market. DSL access arrived in 2001, fixed-line and VoIP telephony followed in 2004, and unbundled DSL was introduced in 2007. The company opened its data11 data center in 2010, followed by FTTH services in 2013 and digital television in 2014. Business SIP trunking and virtual PBX were added in 2015, while a virtual-server IaaS platform followed in 2017. More recent additions include mobile fallback, SD-WAN, Microsoft Teams SIP integration, Virtual Leased Lines, Zero Trust services, endpoint security, and hosted 3CX.

For hosting customers, the portfolio combines shared web hosting, virtual managed servers, domain registration, email hosting, SSL certificates, backups, colocation/rackspace, dedicated rackspace, Internet connectivity, VPN, private Layer 2 networking, and related telecommunications services. This makes SolNet considerably broader than a conventional shared-hosting provider, particularly for Swiss companies that may eventually need networking, colocated hardware, managed infrastructure, or private site-to-site connectivity.

The entry-level SolNet WEBSERVER is the main shared-hosting product. It starts at CHF 6.90 per month and includes 50 GB of storage, unlimited monthly traffic, support for as many as 25 domains, unlimited subdomains, up to 100 email addresses, and 25 MySQL databases. Websites are hosted in Switzerland within SolNet's data11 infrastructure.

The hosting environment supports WordPress, Joomla!, Drupal, TYPO3, PHP 8.3, MySQL, and common PHP-based applications. Let's Encrypt SSL/TLS certificates are available without an additional certificate charge, and daily backups are included. SFTP provides encrypted file transfer and is the preferable alternative to ordinary FTP.

The Webserver architecture is more sophisticated than a simple single-machine shared-hosting configuration. Multiple web servers operate behind a load balancer, while MySQL runs on separate database systems. This distributes website and database workloads across different infrastructure layers and gives the platform better scalability than an entry-level account tied to one traditional hosting server.

Database administration is available through phpMyAdmin. Direct external MySQL connections are disabled for security reasons, so developers who normally administer a database remotely from desktop software need to work through the hosting environment instead. PHP-based database tools can also be installed inside the customer's webspace when required.

Email hosting is integrated into Webserver accounts. Customers can create mailboxes, forwarding arrangements, and aliases, while secure IMAP and authenticated SMTP are supported. Automatic Let's Encrypt certificate renewal reduces routine SSL administration, making the package practical for small company websites, CMS installations, and personal or professional sites that need email and databases alongside web hosting.

Some long-standing customers may still encounter older package names such as Light, Basic, Developer, and Professional. The current primary Webserver configuration instead centers on 50 GB of storage and support for 25 domains, so legacy-account resources can differ from the modern package.

Customers requiring operating-system access can move to SolNet MANAGED SERVER virtual. The base configuration begins with 1 vCore, 1 GB of RAM, and 100 GB of storage, while CPU capacity, memory, storage, backup space, and management services can be expanded according to the application.

Root access is available, allowing customers to operate Unix or Linux systems directly. This makes the service suitable for developers, application servers, custom software stacks, databases, VPN gateways, and workloads that cannot run within normal shared-hosting restrictions.

Management is modular rather than forced onto every server. Experienced administrators can retain responsibility for the operating system, while customers wanting a managed environment can add operating-system maintenance. SolNet can monitor patch levels, carry out patching according to agreed procedures, perform system checks, and add application monitoring when required.

The Managed Server platform is therefore useful both as a relatively simple Swiss virtual server and as a more extensively managed business environment. Optional backups, operating-system management, application monitoring, SLA upgrades, and dual-site configurations allow the same platform to support considerably more demanding applications.

Physical-server customers are mainly served through Rackspace rather than through a conventional instant-order bare-metal catalog. Shared Rackspace accommodates individual servers by rack unit, while Dedicated Rackspace supports larger deployments. data11 can also accommodate quarter racks, half racks, full racks, secured cages, and private rooms.

This gives companies a practical growth path from shared hosting through virtual infrastructure and eventually into colocated customer-owned hardware. It is particularly useful when the same organization also needs Internet connectivity, private networking, or managed telecommunications.

Domain registration complements the hosting services. SolNet works with SWITCH for .ch and .li domains, with registrations administered in the customer's name. International extensions are also available, with pricing depending on the relevant registrar and TLD.

The wider business catalog is particularly strong in network connectivity. SolNet BUSINESS provides business Internet access with options for fixed addressing, managed configurations, SLAs, fallback connectivity, and multi-gigabit speeds.

SolNet CONNECT fibre supplies dedicated symmetric fiber connections from 2 Mbps through 10 Gbps. Fixed IP addressing, managed equipment, monitoring, and higher availability options make it suitable for offices, server environments, and organizations that require more predictable connectivity than ordinary broadband.

SolNet VPN provides managed MPLS-based private networks for connecting offices, data centers, and remote locations. SolNet VLL extends this with Layer 2 point-to-point connectivity across the SolNet backbone at speeds reaching 10 Gbps and higher. A company colocating equipment in data11 can therefore connect that infrastructure directly to remote business locations without routing all internal traffic across the public Internet.

The telecommunications range includes Virtual PBX, hosted 3CX, DIGITAL VOICE business, DIGITAL VOICE business 4T, and SIP services. Hosted 3CX combines the PBX platform with Swiss-hosted infrastructure and can be expanded with additional channels, numbers, and related services.

Residential customers are also supported through SolNet HOME, while technically experienced private users can choose SolNet EXPERT for higher-speed fiber connectivity, fixed IP addresses, and greater freedom over network hardware.

The customer-facing catalog is primarily in German. Some technical network information is available in English, but a complete English-localized version of the main service catalog does not exist. This is not a significant obstacle for the Swiss German market, although international customers may require assistance with detailed contracts and ordering.
