📄 Editorial Review
Smartweb is a Cape Town, South Africa company specializing in SSL/TLS certificates and other digital identity products. The business has a long history in Internet services, beginning with website design and IT work around 2000, later expanding into web hosting and domain registration before adding SSL and website-security products. Its present direction is much more specialized: Smartweb no longer operates as a conventional web hosting provider and now concentrates on certificates and website security. This means customers looking for shared hosting, VPS, dedicated servers, reseller hosting, or colocation should not consider Smartweb a traditional hosting company today. Its main strength is instead a broad certificate catalog for websites, organizations, software developers, email users, and businesses requiring stronger identity verification.
The core range includes Standard/DV SSL certificates, suitable for basic HTTPS encryption and fast domain validation. These certificates are intended for blogs, smaller websites, landing pages, internal systems, and other projects where proving control of the domain is sufficient. Validation can normally be completed through email, DNS, or a verification file placed on the website.
Smartweb works with several established certificate authorities and offers products from RapidSSL, Comodo/Sectigo, Thawte, GeoTrust, and DigiCert. Certificate features vary by brand and product but generally include strong encryption, broad browser and mobile-device compatibility, certificate-authority warranties, and site seals on qualifying products.
Organization Validation SSL is designed for registered companies that want their organization details verified in addition to domain ownership. The validation process can include company registration information, business address verification, telephone checks, and supporting documentation. OV certificates are therefore more appropriate for established commercial organizations than simple DV certificates.
Extended Validation SSL adds a more rigorous identity-checking process covering legal existence, operational status, physical presence, telephone information, and domain control. EV certificates normally take longer to issue than DV products but provide a higher level of verified organizational identity. Smartweb carries both single-domain and multi-domain EV options, including premium products with substantial certificate-authority warranties.
Wildcard SSL certificates protect a domain together with unlimited first-level subdomains, making them convenient for environments such as mail.example.com, shop.example.com, and portal.example.com. DV and OV wildcard options are available across several brands.
Multi-Domain/SAN SSL certificates are better suited to companies that need to protect several different domains or hostnames with one certificate. SAN entries can be managed according to the limits of the selected certificate, allowing organizations to consolidate certificate administration instead of purchasing a separate certificate for every hostname.
Smartweb also has a substantial Code Signing range for software developers and publishers. Code Signing certificates authenticate the software publisher and allow digitally signed applications, executables, scripts, and other code to establish publisher identity. Standard and EV products are available, including DigiCert and Sectigo options. Some Code Signing products require secure hardware storage and can include a physical USB token.
The S/MIME email certificate range adds digital signatures and email encryption. These certificates can authenticate the sender and protect message contents when used with compatible mail software such as Microsoft Outlook, Apple Mail, and Mozilla Thunderbird. Different validation levels are available for individuals, professionals, and organizations.
A more specialized service is Mark Certificates for BIMI-based email branding. Common Mark Certificates and Verified Mark Certificates can help qualifying organizations display their logo in compatible email clients. Verified Mark Certificates are intended for organizations meeting stricter trademark requirements and are particularly relevant to larger brands concerned with email authenticity, phishing protection, and recognizable corporate identity.
Several free SSL utilities complement the commercial products. The CSR Decoder checks certificate signing requests, the SSL Checker verifies installed certificates and their configuration, and the Why No Padlock tool helps identify mixed-content problems that prevent a website from displaying a fully secure HTTPS connection.
An older client area still contains domain-registration and Website Builder products. The Website Builder range includes different storage allocations, email accounts, SSL, bandwidth, domain registration, and e-commerce functionality depending on the package. These services belong to Smartweb's broader historical catalog, while its current business focus is SSL and digital certificates.
The website is primarily English-language and products are mainly priced in South African Rand (ZAR). Older ordering interfaces can also expose additional currency choices.
