SIDN (Stichting Internet Domeinregistratie Nederland) is the registry that operates the .nl country-code top-level domain and sits at the heart of the Dutch internet. The foundation was created in January 1996 to take over the rapidly growing administration of .nl domain names and today manages more than six million registrations, making .nl one of the larger and more secure country-code domains worldwide. Its history is closely tied to Dutch internet pioneer Piet Beertema and the first .nl domain (cwi.nl) in the mid-1980s, and it presents itself as an infrastructure organisation focused on stability, security and "confidence online" rather than a retail hosting company.

From a product perspective, SIDN concentrates on three main pillars: domain name and registry services, cybersecurity and brand protection, and research and tools through SIDN Labs. On the domain side, it runs the .nl registry and offers supporting services aimed at organisations with significant domain portfolios. The .nl Domain Name service defines how registrations, changes and transfers work, and is available only through accredited registrars and resellers – end customers do not buy directly from SIDN. Complementary services include the Domain Name Portfolio Checker (DPC), which builds a complete inventory of all .nl names registered to an organisation and delivers the result in an Excel file, and .nl Control, which adds an extra protection layer to high-value domains by requiring explicit confirmation (phone and signed approval) before any key registration change, transfer or cancellation is processed.

Cybersecurity and online brand protection form the second major product group. SIDN BrandGuard is an online monitoring platform that tracks domain registrations containing an organisation’s brand name (including typo variants), across .nl and many other extensions, and combines this with insight into logo usage on websites. The system assigns risk scores, alerts customers by e-mail when suspicious registrations appear, and offers legal follow-up through specialist partners. It publishes open tools and measurements such as RegCheck for detecting malicious domain registrations, DNS Workbench and ENTRADA for DNS traffic analysis, SPIN for IoT security, TimeNL as an internet time service, and various validators and visualisation tools.
