📄 Editorial Review

SETAR, formally Servicio di Telecomunicacion di Aruba N.V., is Aruba’s national telecommunications operator and one of the island’s longest-established technology organizations. Its history began in 1986, when the Government of Aruba combined the former Landsradio and Telefoondienst operations following Aruba’s acquisition of Status Aparte within the Kingdom of the Netherlands. SETAR became an incorporated company in 2003, while the Government of Aruba retained full ownership.

SETAR was created as a government telecommunications organization rather than as a privately founded hosting startup. This background gives the company a considerably broader operational base than a conventional web host. Its activities extend across fixed and mobile telecommunications, Internet access, television, business connectivity, cloud infrastructure, data center services and managed IT solutions. LinkedIn places the organization in the 201–500 employee range and associates approximately 329 employees with the company.

Aruba’s first commercial Internet service was introduced through the SETARNET brand in November 1995. The telecommunications infrastructure subsequently expanded through local fiber, satellite connections and submarine cable systems, including the Pan American cable, Alonso de Ojeda cable and Americas II.

The current business portfolio covers web hosting, domain registration, colocation, corporate Internet, local and international leased lines, Infrastructure as a Service, Backup as a Service, hosted PBX, managed workplaces, business communications, IT development, security systems and structured cabling. SETAR also operates residential and commercial fiber, mobile, fixed-line, IPTV and digital television services.

Standard web hosting is available through three Linux packages. WebBasico includes 100 MB of storage, 10 email accounts and one FTP account. WebPlus increases the allocation to 250 MB, 15 email accounts and one FTP account. WebOptimal provides 500 MB, 25 email accounts and one FTP account.

Optional hosting services include MySQL databases, additional email accounts, additional FTP accounts and Wowza live video streaming. Default DNS service uses ns1.setarnet.aw and ns2.setarnet.aw. Domain registration is available for .AW, premium .AW, .COM.AW, .COM, .NET and .ORG names, together with WHOIS and domain-password management.

The hosting packages are intended mainly for small, locally managed websites and basic email use. Storage limits between 100 MB and 500 MB are exceptionally modest by current hosting standards and leave little room for modern content-management systems, media-heavy websites or growing online stores.

Important technical characteristics such as available PHP versions, automatic SSL certificates, traffic limits, backup retention, malware scanning and detailed database allocations are not specified. Customers planning to use WordPress, e-commerce software or custom applications should confirm compatibility and resource restrictions before ordering.

A minimum subscription period of 12 months applies. Applicants must be adult natural persons or legal entities resident or established in Aruba, which makes the service primarily suitable for local residents, companies, public institutions and organizations requiring Aruban billing and domestic support.

SETAR expanded its enterprise technology operations with colocation and Backup as a Service in 2018, hosted PBX in 2019, and Infrastructure as a Service and managed workplace services in 2020. Its Mi Contact Center Cloud platform is hosted inside the SETAR data center.

The company has held ISO/IEC 27001 certification since 2021 and completed recertification against the updated information-security standard in 2024. This is especially relevant for corporate customers using its data center, cloud and managed infrastructure services.

The main website is modern and responsive, with English as its principal language. Legal and service documentation is also available in Dutch, while Spanish versions exist for selected services such as Pay.aw.
