ServerMX is an Italian specialist in managed email hosting rather than a conventional provider of shared web hosting, VPS, cloud servers, or dedicated servers. The service was founded in 2012 by Antonio Cordeddu and operates through Coranto Informatica di Antonio Cordeddu in Selargius, Sardinia. Cordeddu has a Mathematics degree and more than 30 years of experience in information technology. ServerMX remains a small independent business focused almost entirely on email infrastructure.

Its specialization is one of the strongest reasons to consider the service. Email hosting is kept separate from website hosting, allowing customers to retain their existing registrar and web host while moving only their mail service to ServerMX. Existing domains are connected by changing their MX records, and regular packages support unlimited customer domains. Customers without their own domain can also use one of the available ServerMX domain options, while third-party registrations can be handled through iwantmyname.

The main hosted-email packages are SMX Beta 5, SMX Beta 20, and SMX Beta 50. They provide 5 GB, 20 GB, and 50 GB of mailbox storage respectively. All include POP3, IMAP4, SMTP, aliases, forwarding, automatic replies, catch-all functionality, support for multiple domains, and SOGo groupware with CalDAV and CardDAV synchronization. Current packages support attachments up to 50 MB, although certain limits can vary according to the selected package.

The mail platform is built around Debian Linux, Exim, and Dovecot, a mature open-source combination for SMTP, IMAP, and POP3 services. Outgoing messages receive automatic DKIM signing, while customers requiring a dedicated DKIM key for their own domain can request one separately. SpamAssassin and ClamAV provide spam and malware filtering, with customers able to adjust parts of their filtering policy.

Security and privacy receive considerable attention. Account administration supports two-factor authentication, and IMAP, POP3, and SMTP connections can be encrypted using STARTTLS or SSL/TLS. Roundcube supports PGP for customers who want end-to-end message encryption. ServerMX can also remove the sender's originating IP address from outgoing mail headers, providing additional privacy when messages are submitted from a local connection.

Collaboration features include SOGo webmail with shared calendar and address-book capabilities using CalDAV and CardDAV. Standard desktop and mobile email clients remain fully supported, so customers are not locked into a proprietary webmail system. Migration tools can copy incoming mail from an existing provider, while integration with Dropbox can be used for handling larger file-related workflows.

Incoming mail benefits from redundant MX handling. mx1.servermx.com operates as the principal mail exchanger, while mx1backup.servermx.com acts as the backup. When the main mail server cannot receive a message, the secondary system can temporarily accept it and forward it after normal service resumes. Database services are also replicated across geographically separated locations.

ServerMX also provides SMX SMTP, a transactional SMTP service intended for applications, websites, and systems that need a dedicated outbound relay. Its nominal package allowance is 60,000 messages per month. Current contractual limits allow up to 1,000 messages per hour, 10,000 per day, and 15,000 per week.

Regular hosted mailboxes have lower outbound limits. Mailboxes with 5 GB or less can send up to 300 messages per hour, 400 per day, and 1,000 per week. Packages above 5 GB increase those limits to 700 messages per hour, 1,000 per day, and 5,000 per week. These restrictions are appropriate for normal personal and business correspondence but make the ordinary mailbox plans unsuitable for bulk-mail campaigns.

A 30-day free trial is available for testing mailbox and domain-management functions. Trial accounts receive a short grace period afterward before mailbox data is removed. Pricing is offered in EUR. No multi-language/localized version exists.
