📄 Editorial Review

Ransom IT is an Australian hosting and internet-infrastructure provider founded in 2008 by Oliver Ransom. The business began in Adelaide with shared hosting from a single data center before expanding into virtual servers, dedicated hardware, colocation and managed infrastructure across Australia and the Asia-Pacific region.

The legal entity is the Trustee for Ransom IT Trust, operating under Australian Business Number 58 420 637 227. The entity and its GST registration have been active since June 6, 2008, while the Ransom IT business name has been formally registered since February 2014. It remains a privately held and relatively small operation, with an estimated workforce of 2–10 employees.

Ransom IT is now primarily an infrastructure provider rather than a conventional website-hosting company. Its main services include KVM VPS, managed cPanel VPS, unmanaged and managed dedicated servers, semi-managed colocation, white-label reseller arrangements and customized infrastructure. Shared cPanel hosting also remains part of its service history and support documentation, although the current public ordering range concentrates on virtual servers and physical infrastructure.

Virtual private servers are available in Adelaide, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, Sydney, Auckland, Tokyo and Singapore. Australian VPS nodes use Intel Xeon hardware, SSD storage and redundant disk configurations where the selected system permits it. Every standard VPS package includes one IPv4 address and a /64 IPv6 allocation, while additional IPv4 addresses begin at $3 per month and require technical justification.

Both managed and unmanaged VPS arrangements are available. Customers using unmanaged services remain responsible for the operating system, security, software maintenance and backups. Managed configurations can include initial deployment, server monitoring, firewall configuration, software updates, cPanel licensing, off-site backups and ongoing technical assistance. White-label arrangements are also available for hosting businesses that want to resell the infrastructure under their own branding.

The standard KVM range is straightforward and suitable for websites, business applications, development environments and other general-purpose workloads. The entry package provides 2 GB RAM, 30 GB SSD storage, two processor cores and between 1 TB and 1.5 TB of monthly traffic, depending on the selected location. Larger configurations provide 4 GB or 8 GB RAM, additional processor cores, increased storage and as much as 4 TB of transfer.

Dedicated servers are unmanaged by default, with technical assistance covering network operation, hardware failures and basic service issues. Customized Linux management can be added separately. Hardware options range from entry-level Xeon E3 systems to multi-processor machines with more than 512 GB RAM and ten or more SSDs. Both new and refurbished enterprise systems may be supplied, allowing customers to balance cost, performance and hardware generation.

Remote management access to DRAC or IPMI controllers is available through a private VPN at no additional charge. This provides out-of-band access for operating-system installation, power management, recovery work and troubleshooting when the primary server network is unavailable.

The colocation service follows a semi-managed model. Ransom IT handles physical activities such as receiving equipment, installing servers in racks, connecting cables and arranging management-controller connectivity. Customers can provide their own hardware or purchase preconfigured rack servers through the company’s hardware suppliers. Quarter-rack, half-rack and full-rack requirements are handled through customized quotations.

Ransom IT owns the VPS nodes, dedicated servers and network equipment used to deliver its services. The hardware is distributed across multiple carrier-grade data centers instead of depending on one centralized facility. This structure provides broader geographic choice and reduces reliance on a single metropolitan network.

The business has a close operational relationship with Host Universal (hostuniversal.com.au). Oliver Ransom also serves as Managing Director and Head of Sales at Host Universal, while Ransom IT address space is routed through the Host Universal network. The companies retain separate identities but share leadership and integrated network operations.

The website and account portal operate in English. Australian and Auckland products are primarily priced in Australian dollars, while Tokyo and Singapore services are priced in US dollars. The customer portal can display USD and AUD, and some ordering categories also provide a euro currency selector.

The website remains functional and provides access to the essential product, billing and support areas, although its design is less modern than newer cloud-hosting platforms. Some older documentation remains active, including a terms document dating from 2013 and managed-server information centered on older CentOS deployments. Pricing currencies, location counts and availability can also differ between the main product pages and the ordering portal, making a pre-sales confirmation advisable for important deployments.
