*📜 Plan description

Beginner is a free entry-level account that lets you deploy one Python web application on the your-username.pythonanywhere.com subdomain. Resources include 100 CPU-seconds per day for background tasks, one daily scheduled task, up to two in-browser Python/Bash consoles, restricted outbound HTTP(S) access and 512 MB of private disk space. Ideal for students, tutorials and quick prototypes, it provides SSL support for your subdomain, shared console sessions and the ability to upgrade seamlessly as your project grows.

All PythonAnywhere subscriptions include unlimited in-browser consoles, SSH access, scheduled tasks, always-on processes, free SSL, 30-day no-quibble money-back guarantee and monthly no-contract billing. The fully managed platform runs on AWS infrastructure so you can focus on writing code, not managing servers.

📄 Editorial Review

PythonAnywhere is a managed Python development and application-hosting platform founded in 2011 by Giles Thomas and Robert Smithson. Development started in April 2011, and the first version became available the following month. The service later moved from Resolver Systems to PythonAnywhere LLP and became part of Anaconda in June 2022, while continuing to operate under the PythonAnywhere name with its own accounts, infrastructure and customer interface.

PythonAnywhere is not a conventional shared-hosting provider, VPS service or dedicated-server company. It combines browser-based Python development tools with managed application hosting, removing most of the server-administration work normally required to publish a Python project. Customers do not need to configure Linux, install a web server, maintain operating-system packages or manage routine infrastructure updates.

The platform works particularly well for Python students, teachers, independent developers, data analysts, startups, prototypes, internal business applications and small-to-medium production websites. Django, Flask, Bottle, web2py and other WSGI-compatible frameworks are supported. Deployment wizards simplify common Django and Flask installations, while advanced users can configure virtual environments, application paths, environment variables, static files and WSGI settings manually.

Each account includes browser-based file management, source-code editing and interactive consoles. Python and Bash consoles run directly inside the browser, allowing customers to develop and maintain applications without installing a local development environment. Paid customers also receive SSH and SFTP access, making it easier to work with Git repositories, command-line tools and desktop development software.

Several Python releases are available, with the exact selection determined by the system image assigned to the account. Newer images support modern Python 3 releases through Python 3.13, while older images remain available for applications that depend on previous versions. PyPy is also available on selected system images.

Applications can use SQLite, MySQL or PostgreSQL. SQLite is useful for experiments and low-traffic projects, but MySQL or PostgreSQL is more appropriate for production workloads. MySQL is included with paid accounts, while PostgreSQL can be added as a separate paid resource. Paid applications can also connect to supported external databases and internet services.

Scheduled tasks allow scripts to run at specific times or recurring intervals. Always-on tasks are designed for continuously running processes such as queue workers, bots and background services. These processes are monitored and restarted automatically when they stop, including after certain infrastructure interruptions.

Paid accounts support custom domains. Customers register the domain separately and point it to PythonAnywhere through the required DNS record. HTTPS certificates can then be configured, and applications can redirect visitors automatically from HTTP to HTTPS. Integration with Cloudflare is available for custom domains that need additional caching, proxying and DDoS protection.

The HTTP API supports automated management of consoles, files, scheduled tasks, web applications, static-file mappings, SSL settings and CPU information. It is useful for scripted deployments, development tools and administrative integrations.

The managed environment has deliberate limitations. Root access, Docker hosting, custom kernel services, Windows hosting, dedicated servers and conventional VPS administration are not available. Customers cannot install arbitrary system packages or control the underlying web-server configuration. GPU computing is also unavailable, so the platform is not intended for large machine-learning training workloads or GPU-accelerated applications.

Free accounts have restricted outbound internet access and can connect only to approved destinations. Paid accounts receive unrestricted outbound connectivity, although applications do not receive a dedicated fixed outbound IP address. Integrations that require a single allowlisted IP may therefore need a different hosting architecture.

PythonAnywhere operates separate platforms in the United States and Europe. Accounts, applications and databases are not automatically shared between them. The main service uses US dollars and `username.pythonanywhere.com` addresses, while the European service uses euros and `username.eu.pythonanywhere.com` addresses.

The platform and control panel are primarily in English. Its interface is practical, responsive and focused on development rather than conventional hosting administration.
