Private Internet Access (PIA) is a long-established U.S. VPN and online privacy provider founded in 2010 by Andrew Lee. The service originally operated under London Trust Media and developed into one of the larger consumer VPN platforms. In November 2019, London Trust Media and Private Internet Access became part of Kape Technologies (kape.com) through an acquisition valued at approximately $95.5 million. PIA continues to operate under the legal entity PIA Private Internet Access, Inc., with its corporate location in Denver, Colorado.

PIA is not a traditional web hosting company. It does not center its business on shared hosting, VPS, dedicated servers, domain registration, reseller hosting, SSL sales, or colocation. Its services are focused instead on VPN access, Dedicated IP addresses, Antivirus by PIA, Smart DNS, browser extensions, Identity Guard, router VPN configurations, and business or multiple-account VPN use.

The main PIA VPN service includes encrypted internet access, unlimited bandwidth, and unlimited simultaneous device connections. Native applications cover Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, Apple TV, Android TV, and Fire TV, while browser extensions are available for Chrome and Firefox. Smart DNS and router-level configurations extend compatibility to devices that cannot run the native VPN software directly.

PIA supports the WireGuard and OpenVPN protocols. Advanced settings include configurable encryption, DNS controls, VPN Kill Switch, Advanced Kill Switch, automation, split tunneling, port forwarding, LAN access, and multi-hop connections using Shadowsocks or SOCKS5. OpenVPN can also be configured manually on compatible routers using platforms such as DD-WRT, OpenWRT, AsusWRT, pfSense, and FreshTomato.

PIA MACE adds DNS-level blocking for domains associated with advertising, tracking, phishing, and malware. It works at the DNS layer rather than operating as a conventional browser advertisement blocker, keeping resource consumption relatively low.

Identity Guard adds breach monitoring for email addresses. It can monitor up to two email addresses against known breach databases and alert the account holder when a monitored address appears in a breach. It is primarily a monitoring and notification feature rather than a full identity-theft protection service.

Smart DNS is intended for smart TVs, game consoles, and other devices where a native VPN client may not be practical. Customers create Smart DNS settings from their PIA account and configure them manually on the device. Smart DNS changes location-related DNS behavior but does not encrypt traffic or replace the device's public IP address in the same way as the VPN connection.

The paid Dedicated IP option supplies a static VPN address for customers who need a consistent IP. Locations include Australia, Belgium, Canada, Germany, Japan, Singapore, Sweden, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, and multiple U.S. regions. Dedicated IP activation uses a token-based system designed to separate the assigned address from the customer's normal account identity.

Antivirus by PIA is an optional Windows security product available alongside a VPN subscription. It includes real-time malware protection, Web Shield, cloud-based malware definitions, scheduled and manual scans, quarantine controls, security reports, and additional protection against vulnerable system settings and emerging threats.

PIA's Chrome and Firefox extensions provide browser-specific VPN functionality with additional controls involving WebRTC, tracking, camera and microphone access, and HTTPS behavior. These extensions protect browser traffic rather than replacing the full desktop VPN application.

Privacy remains a central part of the service. PIA operates under a no-logs policy covering browsing history, destination addresses, user IP addresses, connection timestamps, bandwidth logs, and DNS queries. Its VPN infrastructure and privacy controls have undergone repeated independent audits, including further Deloitte Audit Romania verification completed in 2025 and announced in 2026. The client applications are also open source.
