plusserver GmbH is a German cloud, managed infrastructure, dedicated-server, security and colocation provider headquartered in Cologne, Germany. Its history goes back to 1999, when Thomas Strohe founded the business that ultimately became part of today's PlusServer organization. Over time, the company grew through the consolidation of several major German managed-hosting operations, including the former PlusServer activities, Host Europe Group's managed-hosting division and Telefónica Online Services. BC Partners acquired PlusServer from GoDaddy in 2017, while the current direct corporate owner is PlusHolding GmbH.

The company is now firmly positioned in professional and enterprise IT rather than conventional low-cost web hosting. Its services are intended mainly for companies, public-sector organizations and professional IT environments. The portfolio covers public cloud, private cloud, hybrid cloud, Kubernetes, managed databases, object storage, network storage, backup, dedicated servers, dedicated storage, colocation, managed IT operations, migration, security services, identity management and AI infrastructure. Traditional retail shared hosting, reseller packages, cPanel/Plesk hosting plans and simple consumer website builders are no longer the focus.

Current management includes Dr. Marc Wilczek, who became CEO on March 1, 2026, together with CFO Raphael Bächle. PlusServer employs more than 300 people, placing it well above the scale of a typical regional hosting company and closer to a German enterprise infrastructure and managed-cloud operator.

One of the main cloud platforms is pluscloud open, an OpenStack-based environment developed around open standards and the Sovereign Cloud Stack ecosystem. It is particularly suitable for containerized applications, scalable web services, cloud-native workloads and infrastructure-as-code deployments. Customers can combine virtual CPU, memory, storage, load balancing and public IP resources while managing environments through OpenStack Horizon, APIs and automation tools. Internet traffic is included under a fair-use model, making billing easier to predict for ordinary workloads.

The second major public-cloud environment is pluscloud VMware, which is better suited to organizations already operating VMware-based infrastructure or applications that need a more traditional enterprise virtualization environment. Virtual compute, storage, networking and backup options are combined with VMware Cloud Director self-service management, while the infrastructure remains inside Germany.

Customers wanting isolated virtualization infrastructure can use Managed Private Cloud Proxmox. These environments begin with three dedicated nodes and combine Proxmox virtualization with PlusServer's managed operations. This is particularly interesting for organizations looking for a managed alternative to proprietary virtualization platforms while maintaining dedicated resources and direct control over the virtualization layer.

Dedicated infrastructure remains an important part of the company. Dedicated Servers use enterprise hardware with AMD EPYC or Intel Xeon processors, HPE ProLiant platforms and redundant high-speed networking. Standard configurations include redundant 2×10 Gbit/s interfaces, while Internet connectivity can provide up to a guaranteed 5 Gbit/s depending on the configuration. Debian and Ubuntu are available as standard Linux operating systems, while customized environments can also support Red Hat Enterprise Linux and Microsoft Windows Server.

Dedicated Storage extends these server environments with high-availability storage systems built around redundant controllers, power supplies and network interfaces. Depending on the selected architecture, customers can use NVMe storage together with Fibre Channel, iSCSI, NFS and SMB/CIFS. Snapshot capabilities and ransomware-oriented protection make the service suitable for databases, virtualization platforms, business applications and large persistent datasets.

The Kubernetes portfolio is particularly extensive. Managed Kubernetes provides a CNCF-compatible environment with lifecycle management, scaling and operational assistance. mogenius Kubernetes Manager adds self-service and automation, while Managed Kubernetes & Security Suite combines Kubernetes operation with additional security controls. Private Registry handles container images and Helm charts, and Workload Protection extends security into container and cloud-native workloads.

Managed database services include MySQL, PostgreSQL and MariaDB as a Service. Installation, monitoring, patching, backups and much of the routine administration are managed centrally. This is useful for production applications where customers want database functionality without maintaining the complete operating system and database stack themselves. Managed Caching is based on Valkey and provides a Redis-compatible in-memory caching platform.

Storage services are available separately from dedicated systems. S3 Object Storage provides an S3-compatible API, several resilience levels, optional geo-redundancy and Object Lock/WORM capabilities. API calls and normal traffic are not charged separately under the standard pricing structure, which simplifies usage-based storage calculations. Backup as a Service protects server, cloud and workstation workloads with geographically separated backup copies, while Network Storage provides shared capacity and snapshot functionality for hosted environments.

Keycloak as a Service provides managed authentication and authorization infrastructure. PlusServer handles operation, updates, monitoring and backups of the underlying Keycloak environment while customers remain responsible for their identities, access policies and application integrations.

The security portfolio extends far beyond ordinary hosting firewall features. DDoS Protection provides mitigation together with web-application protection and related delivery capabilities. SOC as a Service provides continuous security monitoring and response, while EDR as a Service protects servers, cloud workloads and endpoints.

The Security Scanner adds automated vulnerability scanning for internal and Internet-facing systems. It supports IPv4 and IPv6 networks, produces both management-oriented and technical reports and is based on Greenbone vulnerability-management technology. More than 150,000 vulnerability tests are available, making it useful for continuous infrastructure auditing rather than only occasional website scans. Next Generation Firewall, cloud workload protection and security consulting complete the security portfolio.

Artificial intelligence has also become an important part of the company. The AI platform combines infrastructure located in Germany with open technologies, AI models and managed operational components. It is intended for organizations that want to develop or operate AI systems while retaining tighter control over data location and infrastructure sovereignty. AI Training supplements the platform with structured training around secure and compliant business use of artificial intelligence.

Managed Cloud provides different levels of operational responsibility for infrastructure customers, while consulting services cover architecture, optimization and migration. Hybrid Cloud can combine dedicated systems, private cloud and public cloud resources, giving customers a practical migration model for applications that cannot all be moved into the same environment at once.

Colocation remains available for organizations that want to continue using their own physical equipment. Rack space, private cages, redundant power, network connectivity and remote-hands services can be combined with PlusServer's dedicated, private-cloud and public-cloud infrastructure. This makes hybrid architectures considerably easier to build than when colocated hardware and cloud resources are operated by unrelated providers.

The main website supports German and English, which matches the company's focus on Germany while remaining usable for international business customers. Services are primarily priced in EUR, and the entire commercial model is strongly B2B oriented.
