Panix, operated by Public Access Networks Corporation, is one of the oldest continuously operating commercial Internet providers in the United States. The business was founded in 1989 by Alexis Rosen and Jim Baumbach in New York, giving it a history that predates the commercial Web and most companies now associated with web hosting. Alexis Rosen has remained closely connected with the business and serves as President and CEO. Public Access Networks is privately held and remains a relatively small, technically focused organization rather than part of a large hosting conglomerate.

Panix is historically notable beyond ordinary hosting. It was among the earliest commercial Internet access providers, originally operating Unix-oriented services at a time when consumer Internet access was still uncommon. The company also became involved in two significant episodes in Internet-security history: a major SYN-flood denial-of-service attack against Panix in 1996, and a domain-name hijacking incident affecting panix.com in 2005. Its long operating history therefore covers several generations of Internet infrastructure, security practices, access technologies and hosting platforms.

The present portfolio still reflects those technical roots. Services include Shared Web Hosting, Dedicated Web Hosting, Xen VPS, Server Colocation, Email Hosting, Email Forwarding, Mailing Lists, DNS, Unix Shell Accounts, leased-line connectivity, Dial-up Internet access, Web Programming and Network Consulting. This is a considerably different mix from a modern mass-market host centered on WordPress, website builders and aggressive introductory discounts.

Panix does not operate as a conventional retail domain registrar. Customers can maintain their domain registration with an external registrar while using Panix for DNS, websites and email. This separation works well for technically experienced customers who prefer to keep domain ownership independent from their hosting provider.

Cheap-Web is the entry-level shared web hosting service. It supports one domain and includes FTP and Unix-shell website maintenance, primary DNS, unlimited forwarding aliases, 6 GB of RAID-backed storage, 10 GB of monthly transfer and SSL capability. CGI applications can use technologies including C, C++, shell scripting, Perl, Python and PHP. The important limitation is that Cheap-Web requires a Panix Unix shell account, making it more of an extension of the traditional Panix Unix environment than an ordinary standalone shared-hosting package.

Standard Web provides a larger Unix-oriented hosting environment with an enhanced shell account, one domain, optional FTP access, DNS and ten 6 GB mailboxes. Customers comfortable working through shell and FTP receive considerably more direct access than with heavily restricted entry-level shared hosting.

Advanced Web supports up to three websites and domains, ten mailboxes for each domain, 45 GB of RAID storage and 400 GB of monthly transfer. It is better suited to a customer maintaining several conventional websites without needing an entire virtual server.

Developer Web removes many of the practical site-count restrictions and accommodates unlimited websites and domains, with FTP or Unix-shell maintenance and ten mailboxes per hosted domain. The service is particularly appropriate for developers and technical organizations that prefer a traditional Unix hosting environment rather than a graphical reseller-style interface.

A separate Dedicated Web Server gives one customer exclusive server resources together with 100 GB of RAID-protected storage, unlimited websites and domains, up to 16 IP addresses and an independent MySQL server supporting unlimited databases. It also provides considerably greater administrative flexibility than shared hosting. Some specifications associated with this long-running product line come from an older hardware generation, making the exact server configuration particularly important when ordering dedicated hardware today.

The most interesting current infrastructure product is V-Colo, Panix's Xen-based virtual server platform. Standard VC configurations start with 2 GB RAM and 48 GB of storage and scale to 16 GB RAM with 384 GB of storage. Larger LV systems extend as far as 128 GB RAM, 4 TB of storage and 96 TB of monthly transfer. The platform includes an IP address, DNS service for as many as 100 domains, console access, nightly backups and SSD-backed distributed storage.

Operating-system support is unusually broad. Linux options include current AlmaLinux and Debian releases, while FreeBSD, NetBSD and OpenBSD are also supported. That BSD coverage remains a meaningful differentiator because many low-cost VPS companies concentrate almost exclusively on Linux and Windows.

V-Colo is essentially an unmanaged VPS. Panix maintains the virtualization platform, network and underlying hardware, while customers remain responsible for their operating system, software, security configuration and everyday server administration. Additional systems administration can be purchased at consulting rates. This model is a good match for experienced administrators but less appropriate for customers expecting a fully managed VPS where application maintenance is included automatically.

Physical Server Colocation remains available in New York. Hardware from Mac Mini-sized systems through 4U servers can be colocated with gigabit Ethernet connectivity, remotely controlled power, serial-console access, IP allocations and physical access for maintenance by appointment. Customers own and control their hardware while Panix supplies the rack environment, power and network connectivity.

Email continues to be a standalone product rather than merely an add-on to web hosting. Mailbox Hosting supports customer domains as well as Panix's access.net addressing, with web-based administration for mailboxes and aliases. Individual mailboxes and blocks of ten can be purchased independently.

Forwarded Domain Email provides unlimited forwarding addresses together with primary and secondary DNS. This is useful for customers who want email aliases at their own domain without maintaining full mailboxes at Panix.

Mailing List Hosting uses GNU Mailman and includes browser-based list administration. Although mailing lists are now a niche requirement compared with modern collaboration platforms, Mailman remains valuable for technical communities, associations, open-source projects and organizations that rely on standards-based email discussion lists.

One of the most distinctive remaining Panix products is the Unix Shell Account. Remote Unix shell access is available independently, while Inet combines shell access with traditional dial-up capabilities. PPP dial-up service also remains available and includes shell access, email, RAID-backed storage and personal web space. Very few established Internet companies still support this type of service in 2026.

Business connectivity includes traditional T1 and T3 leased-line services, with fractional and bonded configurations available in appropriate situations. T3 connectivity can work with Panix-assigned addresses or customer-owned IP space and can accommodate multihoming and customized routing. These services are naturally concentrated around the New York metropolitan market and are now much more specialized than they were during the earlier commercial Internet era.

Panix also provides network consulting covering technical infrastructure and related administration. This fits the company particularly well because networking, Unix systems and Internet infrastructure have always been central to its operation rather than secondary services added to a mass-market hosting catalog.

The Panix website is visibly from an earlier Web era. Its layout is heavily text-based, several sections retain the appearance of classic fixed-width technical documentation, and some legacy connectivity information sits alongside much newer VPS and email material. The company has nevertheless continued updating important operational areas, including modern VPS operating systems, virtualization infrastructure and email controls such as SPF, DKIM and DMARC. The old-fashioned interface therefore says more about Panix's history and priorities than about whether the underlying service is still maintained.

The website operates in English, which is natural for a New York provider primarily serving the US market, and prices are denominated in US dollars (USD).

Privacy has been part of the operating model since the company's early years. Personally identifying information such as customer names, addresses and telephone numbers is protected except where disclosure is legally required. Acceptable-use rules prohibit harassment, unauthorized access to systems, resource abuse and unsolicited commercial messaging.
