NearlyFreeSpeech.NET is an unusual and long-established U.S. web hosting service operated by NFSN, Inc. since 2002. Instead of selling conventional shared hosting packages with predetermined disk space and bandwidth limits, the company uses a prepaid, usage-based model where customers pay primarily for the resources their websites actually consume.

This approach makes NearlyFreeSpeech.NET substantially different from mainstream shared hosting companies. Customers maintain an account balance, and hosting, storage, databases, DNS, domain-related services and other optional features are deducted from that balance as they are used. There are no typical Bronze, Silver or Unlimited plans and no requirement to prepay for a large annual hosting package.

The service concentrates on managed shared website hosting rather than general-purpose server rental. It does not provide VPS, dedicated servers, colocation or conventional cloud infrastructure. Email is also limited to forwarding rather than complete POP3/IMAP mailbox hosting.

Website hosting is divided into three service classes. Non-Production hosting costs $0.01 per day before resource consumption and is intended for development, testing, personal projects, portfolios and other non-commercial use. Revenue-generating activity is not permitted on this tier. Production hosting costs $0.05 per day and removes the non-commercial restrictions, making it appropriate for business websites and commercial applications. Critical hosting costs $0.50 per day and adds enhanced monitoring and greater operational attention for websites where interruptions have more serious consequences. Critical hosting requires Subscription membership.

The service classes include daily traffic allowances of 1 GiB for Non-Production, 10 GiB for Production and 100 GiB for Critical sites. Traffic exceeding these allowances is currently not metered for additional billing, although this operational arrangement can change rather than functioning as a permanent contractual entitlement.

Website storage costs $1.00 per GiB-month. CPU and memory consumption are measured using NearlyFreeSpeech.NET's proprietary Resource Accounting Units, or RAUs, with computing priced at $0.01 per 44.64 RAUs. This allows very small or lightly used websites to operate at extremely low cost while resource-intensive applications naturally consume a larger account balance.

The hosting environment is considerably more capable than the company's minimalist pricing might suggest. Current systems support PHP 8.1, 8.2, 8.3 and 8.4, together with more than 25 programming languages. Applications and frameworks that can run on the platform include WordPress, Drupal, Joomla, Django, Flask, Laravel, Node.js and Ruby on Rails.

Customers receive full SSH access, along with SCP and SFTP for file management. Development and synchronization tools such as Git, rsync and Unison are also available. This gives technically experienced users much more control than is normally associated with inexpensive shared hosting.

Traditional FTP is no longer supported. FTP had been deprecated for years and stopped functioning in June 2026, after which NearlyFreeSpeech.NET permanently moved file-transfer use toward SSH-based alternatives. SFTP, SCP and SSH are now the standard access methods.

Automatic HTTPS support is included through Let's Encrypt certificates. Certificates are issued and renewed automatically when DNS and site aliases are configured correctly. Sites created after May 22, 2024 use automatic TLS management by default, while compatible older sites have also been moved to the automated system.

Database hosting is based primarily on MariaDB, with current environments covering MariaDB 10, 11 and 12. Each customer receives a private database process and administrative control over databases, tables and database users. The first current-generation MariaDB process does not carry a daily base charge, while additional processes cost $0.01 per day. Database storage and computing consumption are billed separately using the same resource-oriented model as website hosting.

phpMyAdmin is available for browser-based database administration. Advanced customers can also run certain additional database systems, including PostgreSQL, MongoDB and Redis, through custom server processes when suitable for the application.

The managed DNS service supports common record types including A, AAAA, CNAME, MX, NS, SRV, TXT and PTR records. Unlimited subdomains can be created beneath a managed domain without generating separate DNS charges, and customers remain free to use another DNS provider when preferred.

Email Forwarding costs $0.03 per domain per day, equivalent to about $10.95 per year under a 365-day year. Multiple forwarding addresses can be configured for a domain. This is strictly forwarding rather than full email hosting, so customers needing POP3, IMAP or normal hosted mailboxes must use another email provider.

Domain registration and transfer are also available. The registrar backend operates through Public Domain Registry, with domain registrations therefore subject to the relevant registrar and registry conditions in addition to the NearlyFreeSpeech.NET service agreement.

The RespectMyPrivacy service provides proxy contact information for eligible domain registrations. It can substitute a Florida mailing address, voicemail number, fax service and forwarding email address for the registrant's personal contact details. The normal prepaid cost works out to roughly $3.29 per registration year, with additional charges possible when substantial physical mail or fax forwarding is required.

NearlyFreeSpeech.NET is clearly aimed at technically independent customers. There is no conventional website builder, heavily guided onboarding process or fully managed WordPress experience. Customers are expected to understand basic hosting concepts and take responsibility for their own application configuration.

The website and control environment retain a distinctly old-school, text-focused design rather than the large graphical dashboards common among newer hosting companies. The interface is functional and information-dense, but customers looking for a modern drag-and-drop experience will find it considerably more technical.

The service is English-language and prices are denominated in U.S. dollars.
