📄 Editorial Review

Mammoth Cloud is an Australian cloud hosting and VPS provider operated by Mammoth Media Pty Ltd, an Australian private company active since August 27, 2002. The legal entity uses ABN 51 101 844 955 and ACN 101 844 955. The company's history goes back to the early Australian hosting market, with David Harrison and Jason Brooke among its founders. Mammoth Hosting was one of its original trading names, while the VPS operation developed into Mammoth Networks as the business expanded beyond basic hosting.

Mammoth is primarily a cloud VPS and managed infrastructure provider rather than a conventional shared hosting company. Its main products include Linux Cloud VPS, Windows Cloud VPS, cPanel/WHM Cloud VPS and Microsoft SQL Server Cloud VPS, together with Virtual Private Cloud networking, automated backups, external firewalling, load balancing, DNS hosting, domain registration and optional server-management assistance.

The cloud platform uses KVM virtualization and 100% SSD storage. Virtual machines can be resized as requirements change, and customers receive performance graphs, alerts and management tools through Mammoth's own control environment. The infrastructure incorporates N+1 hardware redundancy, while Virtual Private Cloud configurations make it possible to separate workloads into private networks and control routing between systems.

The Virtual Private Cloud service is particularly useful for businesses operating several interconnected servers. Private address ranges can be created for application, database and administrative systems, while internet-facing components remain separated where necessary. More advanced deployments can connect the cloud environment to an office or corporate network through site-to-site VPN connectivity.

Linux Cloud VPS is the lowest-cost route into the platform. General Purpose instances start with the gp.micro configuration at approximately A$25/month, including 1 CPU core, 1 GB RAM, 20 GB SSD storage and 500 GB transfer. Larger General Purpose configurations scale to 6 cores, 8 GB RAM, 150 GB SSD and 4 TB transfer, while Compute Optimised configurations allocate proportionally more processing capacity and can reach 12 cores.

Linux installations include distributions such as Ubuntu, Debian and CentOS, while Bring Your Own ISO gives experienced administrators considerably more freedom, including the possibility of installing other Linux distributions or BSD systems. Provisioning is automated and normally makes a new machine available very quickly, with root-level administration performed through SSH.

The KVM environment uses VirtIO devices for efficient virtual storage and networking. More advanced configuration options include alternative virtual CPU models, Hyper-V extensions for compatible Windows workloads and nested virtualization. Nested KVM can therefore be used for specialized testing or virtualization projects, although a proper VPC architecture remains preferable for production multi-server environments.

Windows Cloud VPS includes licensed Windows Server 2025, Windows Server 2022 and Windows Server 2019 Standard. Remote Desktop is enabled for administration, and password resets, IP management and common VPS operations are available through the control platform. Entry pricing begins at approximately A$45/month, with larger General Purpose and Compute Optimised configurations providing considerably more CPU, memory, SSD storage and transfer capacity.

For customers who prefer the familiar hosting administration environment of cPanel, the cPanel/WHM Cloud VPS range combines a Linux VPS with cPanel and WHM already installed and licensed. Pricing starts at approximately A$70/month for 2 CPU cores, 2 GB RAM and 40 GB SSD storage. Larger plans reach 8 cores and 16 GB RAM in the General Purpose range, while Compute Optimised configurations can reach 16 cores, 16 GB RAM, 600 GB SSD storage and 15 TB of included transfer.

The cPanel product remains a virtual private server rather than a conventional shared-hosting account. Customers therefore receive significantly more control over the hosting environment but also retain responsibility for the operating system and server configuration unless management assistance is added.

Microsoft SQL Server Cloud VPS is aimed at Windows applications that require licensed Microsoft database software. SQL Server Web Edition configurations start at approximately A$110/month. Standard Edition carries much higher Microsoft licensing costs, causing suitable configurations to rise into the several-hundred or even several-thousand Australian dollar range. This makes the service relevant mainly to business applications, .NET deployments and established Microsoft database workloads rather than inexpensive website hosting.

Mammoth includes one automatic full-disk backup every week with each server. Additional daily, weekly or monthly restore points can be retained for approximately A$0.10 per GB of backup storage. Standard backup copies are stored separately from the VPS itself, and an additional off-site copy can be transferred to Amazon Web Services S3 for an extra charge.

The backup system operates while the VPS remains online and restores can be initiated through mPanel. Important production data should nevertheless have an independent backup strategy as well, particularly because the general contractual terms place responsibility for customer data preservation on the customer.

Each server can also use a free external firewall. Firewalling takes place outside the guest operating system and supports TCP, UDP and ICMP filtering, CIDR ranges and configurable port ranges. Rules can be modified without restarting the VPS. The external mPanel firewall operates on IPv4 traffic, so IPv6 filtering must be handled within the server or through another suitable security layer.

A redundant HTTP/HTTPS load balancer is available from approximately A$10/month. It performs frequent health checks and can distribute traffic between multiple VPS instances, making two or more application servers considerably easier to operate as a fault-tolerant service. Free DNS hosting is also available, with common record types including A, AAAA, CNAME, TXT, SRV and MX, while reverse DNS for allocated server addresses can be controlled through mPanel.

Domain registration complements the infrastructure products. Australian extensions including .com.au, .net.au, .org.au, .id.au, .asn.au and .au are available, together with international extensions such as .com, .net and .org. DNS hosting is included with registered domains.

The service is operated in English and prices are quoted in Australian dollars. Australian GST is included in the listed pricing. Credit card and PayPal are the main payment methods.

Mammoth has a close historical and technical relationship with BinaryLane. BinaryLane developed from the same broader hosting operation but is more strongly oriented toward self-service infrastructure. Mammoth retains a stronger focus on direct customer assistance, telephone access and optional management services, making it better suited to businesses that want Australian cloud infrastructure without relying entirely on self-service support.

One weakness is inconsistency between older and newer technical documentation. The current platform uses KVM and supports modern Windows Server releases, but legacy references to Xen and very old Linux and Windows versions still remain in some technical material. The active KVM product range and current operating-system options are the relevant specifications for new deployments.
