M5 Hosting is an established US infrastructure provider with roots going back to 2001, when the business began as M5 Computer Security. The company later moved into dedicated hosting after recognizing demand for flexible dedicated servers without lengthy contracts or unnecessary bundled services. Its early deployment started with a small group of OpenBSD servers, and the infrastructure grew past 100 servers within the first few years. Mike McCafferty has led the company as CEO, while M5 has developed into a specialized provider serving businesses, developers, SaaS platforms, IT departments, and customers requiring direct control over their infrastructure.

The service portfolio is centered on Dedicated Servers, IaaS Cloud, Private Cloud, Cloud Storage, Colocation, Managed Hosting services, and Off-site Backup rather than conventional low-cost shared hosting. This makes M5 more suitable for technically demanding workloads, customized server environments, hybrid infrastructure, application hosting, databases, development platforms, and organizations needing greater administrative control.

Dedicated servers start at approximately $100/month and cover several generations of Intel Xeon hardware. Configurations can be customized with larger memory allocations, multiple drives, hardware RAID, private VLANs, 10Gbps networking, load balancing, dedicated firewalls, monitoring, and backup services. Linux options include AlmaLinux, Debian, Fedora, Ubuntu, Rocky Linux, openSUSE and Red Hat Enterprise Linux, while FreeBSD, OpenBSD and Windows Server environments are also supported. The M5 Cloud is an IaaS environment based on Apache CloudStack. Virtual machines can be created and managed through a web interface, API, or CloudMonkey CLI, with support for private networks, custom templates, SSH keys, persistent block storage, clustering, VM migration, and disk migration. Storage runs on redundant SAN/ZFS architecture with bonded 10GigE connectivity. CPU resources include guaranteed allocations with additional processing capacity available when the underlying cluster permits it.

Cloud infrastructure is aimed at customers comfortable administering their own operating systems. Administration inside a virtual machine remains the customer's responsibility unless additional management services are arranged. This gives experienced users considerable flexibility, but customers looking for a fully managed VPS should include management requirements when planning the service.

Cloud plans range from small instances with 2GB RAM and one CPU through large configurations reaching 120GB RAM and 24 CPUs. The entry cloud instance costs around $12/month when continuously active, while larger configurations scale according to CPU and memory allocation. Block storage, snapshots, outbound bandwidth, and IPv4 addresses are charged separately.

Private Cloud accommodates environments that need dedicated or specialized compute resources. Configurations can include dedicated CPUs or GPUs and can be adapted for large datasets, AI and machine-learning workloads, archival infrastructure, regulated applications, and workloads that do not fit standardized public-cloud configurations.

Cloud Storage integrates directly with M5 virtual machines and uses redundant block-storage clusters with redundant networking, power components, HBAs, switches, and UPS protection. The architecture allows storage capacity to scale independently from virtual-machine resources and supports VM and disk migration during infrastructure maintenance.

Colocation is available from individual rack units through full cabinets and private cages. Colocated hardware can also be combined with M5 cloud infrastructure and dedicated servers, allowing hybrid configurations where customer-owned equipment works alongside rented infrastructure. Remote hands, hardware replacement, upgrades, KVM access, monitoring, backup, firewall management, application management, and operating-system administration can be added when needed.

The Off-site Backup platform can protect Linux and Windows systems, including physical servers and virtual machines hosted outside M5. Features include multiple daily backup schedules, configurable retention, encrypted data transfer, optional encryption at rest, MySQL-aware and cPanel-aware agents, backup monitoring, and automatic support escalation when backup jobs fail.

The service is primarily aimed at customers in the US and international businesses comfortable working in English. Pricing is denominated in US dollars.
