*📜 Plan description

Lumen Data Protect is an enterprise-grade Backup-as-a-Service offering designed to protect and recover critical business data, applications, and systems quickly and with reduced operational overhead compared to hardware-centric backup environments.

Core service design and operations:
- Turn-key backup and recovery: fully managed service with rapid deployment and flexible self-service storage options.
- Lumen Data Protect portal: self-service access to managed backup services, configuration of custom backup plans, scheduled and ad-hoc backups, and restore workflows for files/systems/databases to a location of your choosing.
- Reporting: view and download reports covering backup status, history, usage, and consumption, with the ability to track current or historical usage at a glance.
- Usage model: pay-as-you-go pricing aligned to the type and amount of data protected and the storage consumed, supporting on-demand and usage-based deployments that remove capital expenses.

Supported workloads and integrations:
- Supported data types include Office 365, Salesforce, file systems, databases, Kubernetes, and virtual machines.
- Protection for virtual or physical servers includes integration with VMware vCenter and recovery options to other sites, support for Azure VM, Hyper-V, and Kubernetes, coverage for Linux or Windows file servers, and database-consistency capabilities for SQL Server, Oracle, and Oracle RAC with point-in-time database recovery.
- Agile data protection patterns are enabled when paired with Lumen Internet On-Demand and Lumen Network Storage, allowing backups to be created whenever required (including during business hours) while flexing bandwidth to meet backup windows and maintaining lower-cost connectivity when not in use.

Security and compliance:
- Role-based access controls to limit backup/restore functions based on operational role.
- Immutable backups encrypted in flight and at rest.
- Self-service audit reports to support compliance evidence gathering and operational review.

Pricing (lowest listed rate used for Plan Price; additional rates included below):
- Object Tier storage: starting at $0.022 per GB per month.
- Adaptive Tier storage: starting at $0.065 per GB per month.
- File workload protection: $0.028 per GB protected.
- Database Plugin Hot Backup: $0.043 per GB protected.
- VM Standard: $4.40 per VM (VM snapshots backup and restore, entire VM).
- Each workload type can incur additional storage charges based on the amount of data stored after deduplication, measured on an hourly maximum basis.
- Listed rates are usage-based, available to qualifying business customers purchasing new service in an eligible U.S. location, and exclude taxes and fees; availability varies and additional commercial requirements (such as credit approval and deposit) may apply.

This service is positioned for organizations seeking simplified operations and scalable protection for mixed environments, including SaaS, databases, VMs, and Kubernetes, while maintaining strong encryption controls, immutable backup options, and transparent usage reporting. It can be deployed alongside Lumen Network Storage for storage tiers that support long-term retention and cost-optimized archives without network egress fee charges.

Both Lumen Network Storage and Lumen Data Protect are positioned as edge compute and storage services for business customers that emphasize rapid deployment, self-service portal management, and usage-based consumption models rather than fixed-capacity contracts. Services may not be available everywhere and can vary by region and eligible service locations. Listed rates are presented as month-to-month USD pricing and generally exclude taxes and fees; additional commercial requirements such as credit approval or deposit may apply. Assistance is available through live chat, sales callback requests, and phone-based engagement for solution scoping and ordering support.

📄 Editorial Review

Lumen Technologies is a major American telecommunications, network infrastructure, cloud, and managed services company headquartered in Monroe, Louisiana. Its history began in 1930, when William Clarke and Marie Williams acquired the Oak Ridge Telephone Company in Louisiana. The business later operated as Century Telephone, CenturyTel, and CenturyLink before adopting the Lumen Technologies name in 2020.

The acquisition of Level 3 Communications in November 2017 played an important role in shaping the present company. The transaction combined CenturyLink’s telecommunications and enterprise operations with Level 3’s international fiber backbone, Internet routing network, data centers, and large corporate customer base. Lumen later sold its EMEA business to Colt for approximately $1.8 billion in November 2023. A further $5.75 billion consumer fiber divestiture was completed in February 2026, leaving Lumen more concentrated on enterprise networking, managed infrastructure, cloud connectivity, security, and AI-related workloads.

Lumen is not a traditional shared web hosting company. It does not concentrate on inexpensive Linux hosting accounts, reseller hosting, entry-level WordPress packages, website builders, or cPanel plans for personal websites. Its infrastructure services are intended mainly for enterprises, government organizations, software platforms, financial institutions, content providers, and companies operating complex or geographically distributed applications.

Its main hosting-related services include Colocation, Edge Bare Metal, Edge Private Cloud, Managed Hosting, and Lumen Network Storage.

Colocation is available through individual cabinets, secured cages, private suites, cross-connects, and high-density power configurations. Customers can connect their equipment directly to Lumen Internet access, private networks, cloud platforms, managed security services, and disaster-recovery infrastructure. Optional Hands & Eyes support covers physical tasks such as equipment inspection, cable installation, hardware replacement, and basic onsite troubleshooting.

Edge Bare Metal provides dedicated single-tenant physical servers without sharing the underlying hardware with another customer. Servers can be provisioned in approximately one hour at supported locations. Customers can select operating systems, use APIs for automation, apply their own security policies, configure access permissions, and connect the servers directly to Lumen networking services.

The bare-metal platform covers more than 60 edge market nodes and places computing resources within approximately five milliseconds of as much as 97% of U.S. business demand. This architecture is well suited to latency-sensitive databases, media delivery, industrial systems, AI inference, gaming platforms, analytics, and applications that cannot operate efficiently from a distant centralized cloud region.

Edge Private Cloud is a fully managed private cloud built around hyperconverged infrastructure and VMware Cloud Foundation technologies. It can be installed in a Lumen hosting facility, inside a customer’s colocation area, at an eligible third-party data center, or directly on the customer’s premises.

Standard private-cloud configurations begin with 32 processing cores, 384 GB RAM, and 5 TB of usable SSD capacity. Larger configurations can reach 1.5 TB RAM and approximately 35 TB of usable SSD storage. Customers retain familiar VMware administration tools, while Lumen handles the hardware, software-defined data center, network integration, platform lifecycle, and underlying operational management.

Microsegmentation, disaster recovery, workload migration, and hybrid-cloud connectivity are available for organizations requiring dedicated infrastructure without maintaining the entire hardware and virtualization stack internally.

Managed Hosting combines dedicated infrastructure with equipment installation, operating-system configuration, bandwidth, monitoring, security, alerting, and onsite technical assistance. Monitoring can cover physical servers, routers, switches, websites, operating systems, applications, and databases. Customers can also receive service runbooks, trend analysis, engineering assistance, and a dedicated service-management contact.

Lumen Network Storage provides distributed block, file, and object storage close to applications and edge workloads. The platform includes snapshots, replication, automated storage tiering, performance objectives, and usage-based capacity. Object storage includes network egress without a separate egress charge, which can reduce costs for applications that regularly transfer large volumes of data.

The wider service portfolio includes Dedicated Internet Access, IP transit, wavelengths, dark fiber, Ethernet, SD-WAN, private IP networking, cloud interconnection, Network-as-a-Service, DDoS protection, managed firewalls, web application firewall services, threat intelligence, backup, cyber-resiliency services, and disaster recovery.

This combination allows organizations to purchase hosting infrastructure, storage, security, and network connectivity through a single enterprise provider rather than coordinating several unrelated vendors.

The main website is available in English, with regional sections for the United States, Australia, Hong Kong, India, Japan, and Singapore. Online rates are primarily expressed in U.S. dollars, while international enterprise agreements can use contract-specific currencies and billing arrangements. The website uses a modern responsive layout and provides access to product information, technical documentation, legal conditions, network maps, service portals, and support resources.
