Layershift is an independent British managed hosting and cloud provider with roots going back to 2001, when co-founders Andrew Cranson and Damien Ransome began offering hosting services from servers in Texas. The business expanded into the UK in 2004, added container-based VPS hosting, and formally became Layershift Limited in 2006. Andrew Cranson remains CEO and co-founder, while Damien Ransome serves as Operations Director and co-founder.

The company has developed well beyond its early shared hosting background. Its current portfolio is focused on Fully Managed VPS, Agency Optimised VPS, Enscale PaaS, High Traffic WordPress hosting, EhloMail business email, CDN/WAF/DDoS protection, domains, SSL certificates and managed security services. The combination is aimed mainly at agencies, developers, growing companies, e-commerce sites and production applications rather than entry-level personal hosting.

Fully Managed VPS combines dedicated virtual resources with extensive server administration. Standard VPS services include 10 TB outbound traffic, proactive monitoring, kernel patching, managed backups, Let's Encrypt SSL and 24/7 technical support. Layershift also handles operating-system and Plesk updates, reducing the amount of routine server administration left to the customer.

Resources are not intentionally oversubscribed, and custom configurations can scale substantially beyond the standard packages, reaching up to 64 GB RAM, 2 TB SSD storage and 32 CPU cores.

The standard Managed VPS range starts with 4 GB RAM, four CPU cores, 50 GB SSD storage and Plesk Web Admin. The 8 GB configuration keeps four CPU cores while increasing storage to 75 GB and using Plesk Web Pro. The 16 GB package provides eight CPU cores and 200 GB SSD storage. CloudLinux and LiteSpeed can also be added for stronger account isolation, PHP management and optimized caching.

Agency Optimised VPS is designed specifically for WordPress agencies managing multiple customer websites. These systems combine CloudLinux, LiteSpeed, WordPress Toolkit, staging environments, caching, Imunify360, basic DDoS protection, daily off-site backups and 24/7 monitoring. Free migrations are included.

The Agency range begins with Mighty One, offering 8 GB RAM, six CPU cores and 100 GB SSD storage. Startup increases this to 12 GB RAM and 150 GB SSD, Grow provides 20 GB RAM, ten CPU cores and 250 GB SSD, while Scale reaches 32 GB RAM, 16 CPU cores and 350 GB SSD. The larger packages are suitable for agencies operating substantial WordPress portfolios, including dozens of active sites.

Enscale PaaS, previously associated with Layershift's Jelastic-based cloud offering, provides a more flexible application platform. It supports Java, PHP, Python, Node.js, Ruby, .NET, Go and Docker, together with MariaDB, MySQL Community Edition, Percona, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, Redis and Memcached.

Resources can scale vertically and horizontally, and billing follows actual consumption rather than requiring customers to pay continuously for their maximum configured capacity. Enscale divides resources into cloudlets, with each cloudlet representing 128 MiB RAM and 400 MHz CPU. Customers can define resource limits, while reserved capacity receives automatic discounts.

Development workflows include Git-based deployment and CI/CD integration. Automatic backups are generated four times every day and retained for 14 days, giving as many as 56 restore points. A 14-day free trial is available.

High Traffic WordPress uses the Enscale platform for WordPress installations that require more resilience than a conventional single-server setup. Deployments can include horizontally scaling application servers, load balancing, database clustering, LiteSpeed caching, firewall controls and Layer 7 DDoS protection. Backups are created four times daily and retained for 14 days. Qualified projects can also receive £100 in proof-of-concept credit.

EhloMail provides UK-hosted business email and collaboration. Standard functionality includes unlimited aliases, IMAP and POP access, anti-spam and antivirus filtering, real-time backup and restoration. Lite includes 5 GB storage, Standard increases this to 30 GB and adds collaboration, advanced search and two-factor authentication, while Professional provides 50 GB storage together with ActiveSync and configurable retention policies.

Calendar, contacts, file storage, enterprise chat and migration assistance make EhloMail more comprehensive than a basic mailbox hosting product.

The CDN/WAF/DDoS range combines managed content delivery with optional application protection. The CDN reaches more than 2,800 points of presence across over 70 countries and regions. Starter includes 1 TB traffic for up to three domains, Growth provides 5 TB for up to 30 domains, and Volume provides 10 TB with unlimited domains. WAF and DDoS protection can be combined with the CDN when application-layer security is also required.

Additional protection is available through BitNinja for Enscale and Imunify360 for Linux VPS systems. BitNinja includes WAF, IDS/IPS, vulnerability management and malware detection, while Imunify360 combines firewall protection, WAF, antivirus scanning, PHP runtime protection, proactive defense and domain reputation monitoring.

Layershift also offers WP Guardian for WordPress security through Plesk. It monitors known WordPress vulnerabilities and can apply virtual patches until the normal application update can safely be installed. Pricing begins at £4 per site per month, falling to £1.56 per site at the 50-site tier.

BotStopper costs £10 per VPS per month and blocks unwanted automated traffic before it reaches hosted applications, without request-count or usage limits.

For Enscale database customers, Releem analyzes MariaDB, MySQL Community and Percona workloads and recommends database configuration improvements. Pricing is $39 per database node per month, billed hourly, and configuration changes remain reversible and under customer control.

Domain registration and transfer services are available alongside hosting, including DNS management through the customer interface. Layershift also provides single-domain, wildcard, multi-domain and EV SSL certificates, with installation assistance, certificate validation support, reissues and renewal reminders.

The website is modern and responsive. The main interface is in English, and public hosting prices are predominantly displayed in GBP (£), although some specialist services and add-ons use USD pricing.
