Lambda, legally operated by Lambda, Inc., is a specialist AI infrastructure and GPU cloud provider founded in 2012 by twin brothers and machine-learning engineers Stephen Balaban and Michael Balaban. The company originated from the founders’ need for more practical machine-learning infrastructure and has developed into a major provider of GPU virtual machines, dedicated AI clusters, private AI factories, and large-scale accelerated computing environments.The company transitioned from the Lambda Labs and lambdalabs.com identity to Lambda and lambda.ai in March 2025. Michel Combes became chief executive officer in May 2026, while Stephen Balaban moved into the chief technology officer role and Michael Balaban continued as chief product officer. Lambda has grown into an organization with hundreds of employees, tens of thousands of customers, and a long-term objective of managing 3 GW of AI computing capacity by 2030.
Lambda’s expansion has been backed by considerable financing. The company raised more than $1.5 billion in November 2025 and completed a $1 billion senior secured credit facility in May 2026, replacing and expanding an earlier $275 million facility. Its multibillion-dollar, multi-year agreement with Microsoft covers AI infrastructure powered by tens of thousands of NVIDIA GPUs.
This is not a conventional web hosting provider. Lambda does not focus on shared hosting, domain registration, email hosting, general-purpose VPS plans, website builders, reseller packages, or inexpensive dedicated servers. Its infrastructure is built specifically for artificial intelligence, machine learning, distributed model training, fine-tuning, scientific computing, and production inference.
The most accessible product is Lambda Instances, which provides Linux virtual machines equipped with between one and eight GPUs. These systems are appropriate for development, testing, research, inference, and smaller training workloads. Available hardware includes NVIDIA B200, H100, GH200, A100, A10, A6000, V100, and RTX 6000 GPUs, although exact availability depends on region and current capacity. Instances can normally be deployed within minutes through the web console, command-line interface, or API.
1-Click Clusters extend the platform into dedicated multi-node environments with between 16 and more than 2,000 B200 or H100 GPUs. These systems use high-speed InfiniBand networking and are intended for demanding distributed training, fine-tuning, and large inference deployments. Reservation periods generally begin at two weeks and can extend to one year, while longer arrangements are negotiated directly.
At the highest level, Lambda Superclusters provide between 4,000 and more than 165,000 GPUs in physically isolated, single-tenant environments. These systems are designed for frontier AI laboratories, hyperscalers, government projects, research institutions, and large enterprises requiring long-term access to substantial GPU capacity. Contracts normally begin with a three-year commitment.
Superclusters can incorporate NVIDIA VR200 NVL72, GB300 NVL72, HGX B300, and other current-generation architectures. They combine dense GPU compute, high-capacity electrical systems, liquid cooling, NVLink, InfiniBand or RoCE networking, distributed storage, monitoring, orchestration, and dedicated engineering support.
Bare Metal Instances are being introduced for NVIDIA Vera Rubin NVL72 Superclusters during the second half of 2026. These systems remove the virtualization layer and provide direct access to the server CPU, GPUs, system memory, local storage, firmware, and network fabric while retaining API-based provisioning and lifecycle management.
Lambda Stack is one of the platform’s most useful features for developers. This Ubuntu-based software environment includes CUDA, cuDNN, NCCL, NVIDIA Container Toolkit, Docker, PyTorch, TensorFlow, Keras, JAX, Triton, development utilities, and the necessary GPU drivers. It comes preinstalled on most cloud instances, avoiding much of the configuration normally required before beginning a machine-learning project. Minimal GPU Base and standard Ubuntu Server images are also available for customers that prefer a cleaner operating environment.
Lambda discontinued its on-premises hardware sales business on August 29, 2025. Vector workstations, Scalar servers, Hyperplane systems, and related appliances are now legacy products rather than part of the active cloud catalogue. Existing warranties continue to receive support, and customers can obtain assistance when moving older local infrastructure into Lambda Cloud.
Security is appropriate for enterprise and regulated workloads. Lambda maintains SOC 2 Type II attestation together with ISO 27001, ISO 27017, ISO 27701, and ISO 22301 certifications. Dedicated environments isolate compute, storage, and networking from other customers. Superclusters can include encrypted storage, secure enclosures, granular access controls, multifactor authentication, continuous monitoring, and customer-controlled revocation of Lambda access credentials.
