Jimdo is a German website-building and small-business platform founded in 2007 by Matthias Henze, Christian Springub, and Fridtjof Detzner. The founders began working together on website-management technology while still at school, eventually developing Jimdo into one of Europe’s most established do-it-yourself website platforms.

The global service is owned and developed by Jimdo GmbH in Hamburg. Matthias Henze continues to lead the business as co-founder and CEO. Jimdo has been used to create more than 32 million websites worldwide and serves customers across more than 190 countries.

The company received a €25 million minority investment from Spectrum Equity in 2015. Jimdo remained privately controlled and continued operating as an independent German technology company.

Jimdo has a distinct operating structure in Japan. KDDI Web Communications (kddi-webcommunications.co.jp) has handled the Japanese edition since March 2009, selling and providing the localized service on behalf of Jimdo GmbH. This is a commercial representation and operating relationship rather than ownership of the German company.

KDDI Web Communications is a Japanese KDDI Group company established in 1987, with hosting operations dating from 1997. It operates as a registered telecommunications company, is a JPNIC member and JPRS-designated provider, and employed 206 people as of March 2026. Jimdo forms part of its web-service business alongside the CPI corporate hosting platform and several communication and website-management services.

The Japanese Jimdo edition reached 10,000 registrations within five days of its 2009 launch. It has since exceeded two million websites in Japan, giving the platform a stronger local presence than many international website builders that operate only through translated interfaces.

Jimdo is primarily intended for freelancers, self-employed professionals, consultants, local businesses, restaurants, creative professionals, appointment-based services, and small online retailers. It combines website creation with domain management, online selling, local-business visibility, customer inquiries, appointments, invoices, and payment collection.

The central product is the AI Website Builder. After receiving information about a company, profession, or project, the system prepares an initial website structure with relevant pages, text, images, navigation, and calls to action. The result can be adjusted through a visual editor without requiring HTML, CSS, database administration, or server maintenance.

Customers can modify colors, typography, layouts, images, content sections, navigation, and page structure directly from the editor. The Japanese edition offers the same two principal creation environments. Jimdo AI Builder prepares a website from answers supplied during setup, while Jimdo Creator provides a more traditional editor with greater manual control, broader template customization, and support for custom code.

Search-related functionality includes editable page titles, page descriptions, automatic technical optimization, structured website information, statistics, local-business listings, Search Console integration, and content assistance. Many common SEO tasks are handled automatically without requiring external plugins.

The Free plan includes hosting, HTTPS security, responsive layouts, contact forms, social-media links, and a Jimdo subdomain. Platform branding remains visible, while storage, page limits, and business functions are restricted. It still provides a practical way to create and test a complete website before purchasing a subscription.

Paid website plans support custom domains, remove or reduce Jimdo branding, increase storage and page allowances, and add SEO, statistics, support, and business-management features. Storage allocations reach approximately 30 GB with Start, 50 GB with Grow, and 500 GB with Unlimited, compared with approximately 5 GB on the Free plan.

The Online Store is designed for small and medium-sized catalogs rather than large enterprise-commerce operations. A store can contain up to 100 products, including products with selectable variants.

Merchants can manage inventory, orders, product prices, discounts, customer notes, personalized products, shipping charges, free-shipping thresholds, and local pickup through the same dashboard used for the website.

Jimdo does not deduct an additional percentage commission from online-store sales. Merchants still pay the normal processing fees charged by their connected payment provider.

Connections are available for Google Business Profile, Google Maps, Search Console, Analytics, advertising services, social networks, and messaging platforms. Businesses can also manage reviews, publish updates, and monitor their local visibility from a centralized environment.

The Get Booked appointment system allows customers to schedule meetings or services through a website or shared booking link. It supports individual appointments, group sessions, recurring bookings, working hours, breaks, cancellation periods, confirmation messages, reminders, and payments during booking.

Basic booking functions are available to free users, while paid subscriptions provide additional scheduling, communication, and business-management options. The Get Paid tools include branded invoices and payment links. Payment requests can be sent through email, messaging applications, invoices, social networks, or QR codes. The connected payment processor continues to apply its normal transaction fees.

Invoicing and accounting functions are most extensively developed for Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. Available taxation, bookkeeping, and payment features differ between countries.

Additional services include domain registration, domain transfers, DNS management, automatic HTTPS certificates, email forwarding, connections to external professional email services, legal-text assistance, website statistics, social-media integrations, logo creation, and business-directory management.

An eligible paid package normally includes a domain during its initial contract period. Standard domain-renewal fees apply after the included period ends. Available extensions and registration prices depend on the customer’s country.

Jimdo is available in English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Japanese, and Dutch. Local editions use regional currencies, payment methods, contract conditions, domain options, support systems, and business tools.

The Japanese edition is not simply a translated version of the German service. KDDI Web Communications manages local sales, Japanese contracts, domestic customer communication, localized pricing, and Japanese-language support. Customer data associated with the Japanese service may also be shared with Jimdo GmbH and relevant technology partners for platform operation.

The platform is modern, responsive, and practical on desktop and mobile devices. It is particularly convenient for customers who want their website, store, appointments, forms, customer contacts, and payments managed through one account.

Jimdo is not conventional shared hosting and does not provide unrestricted databases, SSH access, server configuration, application deployment, or complete control over the hosting environment.
