📜 Plan description

.dot.swiss CHF 111.11 / year

.ch CHF 12.96 / year

.swiss stands for the characteristics of the globally known Swiss brand such as quality, precision and reliability. In addition to the existing country domains such as .ch and names already assigned such as .org, further generic namespaces were made possible on the Internet by ICANN (international administrative office for domain names on the Internet) in 2012. The federal government has acquired the .swiss top level domain to ensure that it is used for the benefit of the Swiss community and business.

📄 Editorial Review

iWay is a long-established Swiss Internet, hosting and telecommunications provider headquartered in Zürich-Altstetten. Its history goes back to August 9, 1995, when Markus Vetterli and Matthias Oswald founded Interway Communication GmbH. The original business focused on website development and Internet services before expanding into a broader Internet service provider. One of the early milestones was a datacenter operation in Dättwil, which also served as the company's office at the time. In 2004, Interway merged with Dolphins Network Systems, moved to Zürich and also became a vocational training company.

After 14 years, the business changed from a GmbH into an AG and adopted the iWay name because Interway AG was already in use. Further expansion followed in telecommunications and infrastructure. iWay and Solution.ch founded Nexphone in April 2010 and acquired the Litecom telephony platform, fiber services followed in 2012, and iWay became a domain registrar in 2014. Television services were added in 2018 and mobile subscriptions followed in December 2021.

A major corporate change occurred in 2017, when St. Gallisch-Appenzellische Kraftwerke AG acquired 100% of iWay's shares, retroactively effective from January 1, 2017. iWay retained its own identity, organization and management and continues to operate as a wholly owned SAK subsidiary.

The company has continued to expand. Revenue for 2025 increased from CHF 50.1 million to CHF 53.6 million, representing growth of 7.1%, while the workforce increased from 70 to approximately 75 employees. The management structure is also changing: co-founder Markus Vetterli remains managing director and board member during 2026, while Michael Tobler joined on August 1, 2026 as designated managing director and is expected to assume full CEO responsibility on January 1, 2027.

The company also achieved first place for Cloud Services among business customers in the August 2026 BILANZ Telekom Rating. Quality, flexibility, support and pricing were important parts of the overall assessment.

iWay's hosting portfolio is considerably broader than conventional shared hosting. Services include Web Hosting, Mail Hosting, Hosted Exchange, FTP Hosting, Virtual Servers, NetBackup, Sync & Share, SSL certificates, domain registration, managed servers, rackspace and IP Transit. Hosting and cloud customer data remain in Switzerland, and iWay has carried the swiss hosting quality label since 2020.

The standard Web Hosting range consists of Economy, Economy+ and Business packages. Economy includes 10 GB of web space, ten 5 GB mailboxes and one 1 GB MySQL database. Economy+ increases capacity to 50 GB of storage, 30 mailboxes and ten MySQL databases, while Business provides 200 GB, 50 mailboxes and as many as 50 MySQL databases.

Both Microsoft Windows and Debian GNU/Linux hosting environments are available. FTP access, email services, SSL support, a free Let's Encrypt certificate and daily backups are included. Backup retention depends on the package, with one week for Economy, two weeks for Economy+ and four weeks for Business.

The hosting platform also includes staging and access statistics, while additional resources can be ordered when necessary. Business customers can expand database capacity, storage and FTP accounts. Windows hosting supports options such as MS SQL, ODBC, ColdFusion and custom DLLs, while Linux hosting can be extended with Java/JSP and custom cron jobs. This makes the service suitable for customers needing more flexibility than a very basic shared-hosting package.

Website migrations can be prepared before production DNS is changed. A temporary address allows a website to be tested in the new environment before the domain points to iWay, reducing the risk involved when websites and email accounts are transferred together.

Separate Mail Hosting is available for customers who need professional email without web hosting. Economy includes one 5 GB mailbox, while Business starts with five 5 GB mailboxes. POP3, IMAP, SMTP and webmail are supported, together with unlimited aliases per mailbox, forwarding, out-of-office functions, address books, distribution lists and configurable spam and antivirus filtering. Incoming and outgoing mail gateways can also be used by companies maintaining their own mail servers.

For more advanced business collaboration, Hosted Exchange provides substantially more functionality. A standard Hosted Exchange mailbox includes 25 GB of storage, expandable to 100 GB, together with synchronization of email, calendars, contacts and tasks. Outlook Web Access, MAPI, POP/IMAP and mobile push are supported.

A package including a Microsoft Outlook license is available, while simpler POP/IMAP Exchange mailboxes can be ordered for users who do not need the complete groupware environment. The platform runs on Exchange Server Subscription Edition and is hosted on iWay infrastructure in Switzerland. Server administration, system maintenance, software updates, patches and backups are included as part of the hosted service.

FTP Hosting is intended for companies that regularly exchange large files with customers, suppliers or business partners. The service is based on Serv-U and supports dedicated IPv4 and IPv6 addresses, unlimited users and groups, anonymous FTP, SFTP, SCP, SSH key authentication, SSL/TLS and HTTP/HTTPS file access. Administrators can configure quotas, access permissions, IP allow and block lists, bandwidth limits and usage statistics. Storage can be ordered either with or without backup.

The cloud storage portfolio also includes Sync & Share, available as Single, Business and Enterprise packages. The entry package includes 25 GB for one user, while business plans support more users, groups and larger storage allocations. Features include SSL encryption, unlimited transfer volume, file versioning, secure sharing, browser access and mobile access. Enterprise customers can also use custom branding.

NetBackup adds off-site backup for workstations, servers and business applications. Lite is intended primarily for Windows and macOS endpoints, while Pro supports server workloads and a wider selection of operating systems. Backup storage is redundantly mirrored to a second Swiss datacenter.

Optional NetBackup modules support Microsoft 365, MySQL, MariaDB, PostgreSQL, MS SQL, Exchange, QNAP, Synology, VMware, Hyper-V and Proxmox. This makes the platform suitable for protecting workstations, physical servers, virtual machines, NAS devices, databases and cloud services within the same backup environment.

Current Virtual Server services are oriented primarily toward customized business infrastructure rather than inexpensive instant-deployment VPS packages. Earlier KVM Cloud Server services used a highly granular hourly resource model and provided a self-service portal for adjusting resources, but current virtual-server projects are handled through the broader business virtual-server service. Customers planning new deployments should therefore obtain a current configuration and quotation.

Physical infrastructure services include rackspace and managed-server arrangements. Customers can colocate their own equipment or combine servers with system administration, backup, monitoring and firewall management. The service is therefore more suited to business infrastructure projects than to customers simply looking for a standardized retail dedicated-server package.

Domain services are closely integrated with hosting. Registration, transfers, DNS management and renewals are available for more than 600 TLDs, including .ch, .com, .li, .swiss, .de and .eu. Existing customers can administer domains and DNS settings through the iWay customer portal.

Commercial SSL certificates remain available alongside the free Let's Encrypt certificates included with web hosting. Options include single-domain DV certificates, organization-validated certificates, extended-validation certificates, wildcard certificates and multi-domain certificates. Certificates from RapidSSL, Thawte and GeoTrust are available.

The commercial website and most product information are primarily in German, reflecting the company's Swiss-German customer base. Product prices are quoted in Swiss francs (CHF), and business-service prices are generally stated before Swiss VAT.
