📄 Editorial Review
Hushmail is a Canadian encrypted email and secure communications company founded in 1998. Programmer Cliff Baltzley created the original technology, and the commercial Hushmail service followed in May 1999. The business operates through Hush Communications Canada Inc. from Vancouver, British Columbia, with Ben Cutler serving as CEO since 2001 and Brian Smith as CTO since 2002.Hushmail is not a conventional hosting provider. It does not offer shared hosting, VPS, dedicated servers, reseller hosting or website hosting. Its specialization is encrypted email, secure messaging, custom-domain mailboxes, secure web forms, electronic signatures and email archiving. The service is particularly suitable for healthcare professionals, therapists, law firms, consultants and small organizations handling confidential customer information.
Healthcare is one of the company’s strongest areas. More than 47,000 healthcare professionals use its secure communication tools, with dedicated packages for behavioral health specialists, private practices, clinics and Canadian healthcare organizations. US healthcare accounts include a Business Associate Agreement and features designed to support HIPAA-regulated communication. Canadian healthcare accounts include an Information Manager Agreement supporting PIPEDA and relevant provincial privacy requirements.
Healthcare packages are divided into Basic, Essentials and Growth. Basic provides encrypted email, compliance documentation and message archiving. Essentials adds secure web forms, reusable email templates, scheduled messages and electronic signatures. Growth includes more forms, custom branding, stronger administrative security and priority support.
Practices can use addresses based on their own domain or select an address under one of Hushmail’s service domains. Group administrators can create and remove mailboxes, enforce account-security requirements and manage the organization from a central interface.
The Secure Messaging and Forms service is useful for professionals who want to retain their existing email address. Sensitive messages and attachments remain inside a protected Hushmail environment, while recipients receive an ordinary notification containing a secure access link. This arrangement allows a practice to add protected communication without migrating its complete email infrastructure.
Secure conversations can involve clients, patients, insurance companies, billing providers, external practitioners and other authorized third parties. Documents remain inside the encrypted message center rather than being delivered as ordinary unprotected attachments. A dormant-account option can preserve archived healthcare correspondence when a practitioner temporarily closes or pauses a practice.
Hush Secure Forms provides a drag-and-drop form builder with more than 15 field types, conditional logic, file uploads, body charts, calculated results and multi-page layouts. Submitted forms are converted into PDF documents and delivered to the associated Hushmail inbox, making it practical to transfer completed records into a separate practice-management or electronic health record system.
The form library contains more than 27 adaptable templates. Available documents include intake forms, informed-consent agreements, appointment requests, file-transfer forms, feedback questionnaires, Good Faith Estimates and clinical assessments such as PHQ-9, GAD-7, PCL-5, DASS, SCARED and AUDIT. Forms can be embedded into a website, shared through a public link or sent directly to a specific client.
Electronic signatures are included with qualifying plans and support documents governed by the ESIGN and UETA frameworks. Signing activity includes timestamps and an audit history. Customers must still confirm whether the relevant jurisdiction and document type permit electronic execution.
Hushmail for Small Business follows a similar Basic, Essentials and Growth structure without healthcare-specific agreements. It is suitable for consultants, financial-service companies, nonprofit organizations and other businesses that need encrypted messages, custom-domain email, secure file collection or protected customer forms.
Hushmail for Law combines encrypted email, client forms, single-party electronic signatures, message archives and custom-domain administration. Legal customers can receive notification about demands for account information when the applicable law permits it. When immediate notification is legally restricted, Hushmail can seek permission to notify the affected customer later.
The Personal Use subscription includes 15 GB of email storage, unlimited aliases, scheduled sending, POP and IMAP access, webmail and an iPhone application. Personal accounts do not support custom domains, healthcare compliance agreements or secure-form administration.
An optional package combines Hushmail Personal with NordVPN. The bundle covers up to ten devices and adds VPN connectivity, tracker blocking and malware-related protection.
The native iPhone application supports multiple accounts, two-step verification, Face ID or Touch ID and synchronization with webmail. Desktop applications can connect through encrypted IMAP, POP and SMTP. Android users can access the service through webmail or a compatible third-party email client because there is no dedicated native Android application.
Hushmail uses OpenPGP for encrypted messages and attachments, while TLS protects communication between devices and its servers. Two-step verification can use an authentication application, SMS or an alternate email address. Spam filtering, malware scanning, rate limiting, application-level firewalls and automated account lockouts add further protection.
Webmail, IMAP, POP and SMTP encryption is processed on Hushmail’s servers. The user’s passphrase is transmitted through an encrypted TLS connection when required but is not retained as an ordinary stored password. The iPhone application uses a more client-oriented model in which OpenPGP processing takes place before the message leaves the device.
This architecture prioritizes usability and regulated-business workflows rather than complete provider-inaccessible storage. Hushmail can comply with valid Canadian legal orders, and its server-assisted webmail model is not equivalent to an entirely zero-knowledge email system. It is better suited to professional secure communication than to users seeking complete anonymity from the service provider.
The website has a modern responsive layout and works well on desktop and mobile screens. The service and support documentation are primarily available in English.
