Hightail (formerly YouSendIt) is a cloud-based file sharing and creative collaboration platform under the OpenText umbrella. It started in 2004 as a way to send files too large for email and has since evolved into a workflow hub for agencies, marketing departments, designers, video teams and other creative professionals who need to move from first draft to final approval without losing track of versions, comments or deadlines.

The platform revolves around three pillars: file sharing, creative collaboration and project management. File sharing covers the basics of moving large files quickly and securely. Users can upload from their computer or import content from other cloud storage providers, then send a simple link. Recipients do not need a Hightail account and can view high-resolution previews of images, video, audio, PDFs, presentations and even more complex formats like CAD, which makes review much smoother than forcing every recipient to download files locally. Security settings such as access codes, password-protected links and configurable expiration dates give precise control over who can see or download each file.

On top of simple sending, Hightail adds visual collaboration through Spaces and projects. A Space acts like a visual collection where teams group related assets, invite stakeholders and collect feedback in context. Reviewers can comment on specific regions of an image, leave notes at exact timestamps in video or audio, and have threaded discussions on individual files or at project level. Higher-tier plans add version control, side-by-side version comparison, approvals, to-dos, task management, dashboards and approval routing, so creative work can be managed end-to-end in one place instead of across long email chains and chat logs.

From an infrastructure and governance perspective, the service leans on enterprise-grade security. Content is encrypted in transit, stored in redundant encrypted copies and protected by multiple layers of network and application security. The architecture uses firewalls, DDoS protections, vulnerability scanning, penetration tests and multi-tier separation between front-end, application and database layers. Data center controls align with recognized audit standards, and cross-border data handling is designed for corporate and regulated environments that need stronger assurances than a pure consumer cloud drive.

For day-to-day use, Hightail is accessed primarily via a web interface in any modern browser, plus mobile apps for iOS and Android and integrations with tools like Adobe Creative Cloud, Outlook, Zapier and other OpenText products. Higher plans connect into OpenText Core and Media Management, so Hightail can function as the front-end collaboration layer on top of larger enterprise content management stacks.

This is not web hosting in the classic sense – there is no shared hosting, VPS or dedicated server offering. Hightail behaves as a specialized cloud platform for large-file transfer and creative workflows, aimed at organizations that work with rich media, share assets with clients and need a clear approval trail.
