Greenhost is an Amsterdam-based Dutch hosting provider founded in 2001 by Mart van Santen. The company has developed around a combination of sustainable infrastructure, privacy, open-source technology and digital rights, giving it a noticeably different profile from hosting companies that compete mainly through storage quotas and introductory discounts.

In December 2024, Greenhost became part of The Sharing Group (thesharinggroup.com). Greenhost retained its own brand, team and services while gaining the financial and organizational backing of a larger Dutch technology group. One important direction of this cooperation is the development of European cloud infrastructure with less dependency on the major non-European cloud platforms.

The hosting portfolio covers domain registration, shared hosting, Performance Hosting, VPS and managed infrastructure services. The range is compact but technically well differentiated, moving from conventional PHP hosting to virtual servers and fully managed open-source environments.

Standard shared hosting uses PHP and MariaDB with SSD storage, free Let's Encrypt TLS certificates, daily backups, SSH/SFTP access and integrated e-mail hosting. PHP 8.2, 8.3 and 8.4 are available. Websites are distributed over multiple nodes on the normal shared platform, improving resilience through load balancing and failover rather than depending entirely on a single web server.

The Basic package includes 1 GiB of website storage, 3 GiB of mail storage, five databases and 10 GiB of monthly traffic. Professional increases this to 5 GiB of web storage, 15 GiB of mail storage, 20 databases and 50 GiB of traffic. Premium reaches 10 GiB of web storage, 25 GiB of mail storage, 30 databases and 200 GiB of traffic.

WordPress installation is integrated into the Service Centre, while the same environment is suitable for Drupal, Joomla and other PHP applications. Customers can manage databases, scheduled tasks, TLS certificates, DNS, logs, e-mail, backups and SSH access without depending on cPanel or Plesk.

Performance Hosting is intended for CMS installations and applications that need more CPU, memory and storage performance than conventional shared hosting. These accounts run on nodes with relatively few customers and use distributed NVMe storage, additional vCPU and RAM capacity, and dedicated PHP workers.

Performance Hosting replaces the NFS layer used on ordinary shared hosting with Ceph block storage. This is particularly useful for WordPress, Drupal, Joomla and other applications that generate large numbers of filesystem operations. Packages extend from PH1 with 50 GB of storage, 5 GB RAM and 50 dedicated workers up to PH10 with 400 GB of storage, 20 GB RAM and 400 workers.

Unlike standard multi-node hosting, an individual Performance Hosting account operates on a single compute server, while its data remains distributed through Ceph storage. This architecture makes it possible to move the workload to replacement compute capacity without relying on locally stored application data.

The VPS platform provides substantially more flexibility and administrator-level control. Virtual servers run on Xen virtualization and Ceph-backed SSD storage with three-way redundancy. Debian and Ubuntu are among the available Linux distributions, and servers can be created, stopped, resized and removed through Greenhost's own management environment.

Common VPS configurations start with Green 1, including one processor, 1 GiB RAM, 10 GiB storage and 1 TiB monthly data transfer. The predefined range reaches Green 16 with eight processors, 16 GiB RAM, 160 GiB storage and 16 TiB transfer, while custom configurations are also possible.

Optional VPS backups use daily disk-image snapshots. Seven daily and four weekly copies are retained when the service is enabled. These are stateless snapshots of the running virtual machine, so database-heavy applications should still use application-aware backup procedures where transaction consistency is important.

Managed Services extend the platform to organizations that want Greenhost to operate the application environment as well as the infrastructure. The company has experience with privacy-sensitive and open-source software including Zimbra, GlobaLeaks, Jitsi Meet, Etherpad and Docker-based deployments. Support arrangements can range from normal business-hours management to 24/7 SLA coverage for critical environments.

Privacy remains an important part of the overall service. Free Let's Encrypt certificates, DNSSEC on supported domains, two-factor authentication for the Service Centre and PGP-secured communication are available, while the company's technical and organizational work has long included digital security, internet freedom and human-rights related projects.

A customer-data security incident occurred in April 2026 when an access-control vulnerability affected an internal customer-search API. Data associated with 59 customers was accessed, including 20 records through automated bot traffic and 39 by the security researcher who discovered the issue. Potentially exposed information included customer or company names, billing e-mail addresses, stored IBAN information, active domain registrations and internal Greenhost notes. Login names, passwords, postal addresses and telephone numbers were not part of the affected information.

The vulnerability was corrected after disclosure, affected customers were identified and the incident was reported to the Dutch data-protection authority. The event is significant for a provider strongly associated with privacy, although the detailed disclosure and remediation provide useful transparency about what happened and which information was affected.

Greenhost operates both Dutch and English websites, with greenhost.nl serving the Dutch version and greenhost.net providing English-language information. Services are priced in EUR.
