📄 Editorial Review
Gibtelecom is Gibraltar’s incumbent telecommunications and enterprise infrastructure operator, combining telecommunications, international connectivity, cloud computing, managed infrastructure and data-center services. The Gibtelecom brand dates from 2002, while Gibtelecom Limited was incorporated under its present name in 2003. Its telecommunications history extends much further through predecessor operations, including Gibraltar NYNEX Communications and Gibtel. The modern business took shape after Gibraltar NYNEX Communications acquired Gibtel in 2001 and consolidated the operations under the Gibtelecom identity.HM Government of Gibraltar has owned 100% of Gibtelecom since 2015. Verizon previously held a 50% interest, which was sold to Telekom Slovenije in 2007; Telekom Slovenije later transferred that holding to the Government of Gibraltar. Noel Burrows serves as Chief Executive Officer. At the end of 2024 the company had 137 employees, with an average workforce of 140 during that year. The group served 135,714 customers in 2024 and generated approximately £46.9 million in revenue, including around £20 million from its Enterprise division.
Gibtelecom operates well beyond traditional web hosting. Its enterprise infrastructure portfolio includes Private Cloud, Public Cloud, Hybrid Cloud, Managed Infrastructure, Bare Metal, Co-location, Microsoft 365 Backup, S3-compatible Object Storage and Cloud Connect, backed by its telecommunications and international network operations. The combination is particularly useful when computing, physical infrastructure, storage, backup and connectivity need to be supplied as part of the same deployment.
Private Cloud provides isolated virtual infrastructure for organizations requiring stronger control, security or regulatory separation. Public Cloud follows a consumption-based approach suited to elastic workloads and projects where computing resources need to scale quickly. The cloud environment is based on OpenStack, with redundant components and network paths. Microsoft Windows and Linux operating-system images are available, and infrastructure can be administered through a browser interface or automated using APIs.
Hybrid Cloud combines cloud resources with physical or existing hosted systems through private connectivity. This makes it suitable for companies that cannot move every workload into a public-cloud environment or need sensitive applications to remain on dedicated infrastructure. Hybrid-cloud capability extends across Gibraltar, London, Malta and Malaysia.
Managed Infrastructure provides dedicated physical hardware for organizations requiring bare-metal resources. Gibtelecom can handle procurement, installation, rack deployment, power, connectivity and physical infrastructure management, while customers retain control over operating systems and applications. International deployments can generally be completed in approximately six to eight weeks, depending on hardware specifications and location.
Co-location accommodates customers that already own servers and networking equipment. Full cabinets, shared rack space and private cages are available, with different power-density requirements supported. Electricity and cooling can be incorporated into fixed monthly arrangements, while remote hands-and-eyes assistance is available for equipment requiring physical intervention.
Microsoft 365 environments can be protected through Microsoft 365 Backup, covering Exchange Online, SharePoint Online, OneDrive for Business and Microsoft Teams. The service supports item-level recovery and exports in formats including EML, PST and CSV.
S3 Silo Storage provides S3-compatible object storage for backup data, archives, media, application content, analytics and other unstructured datasets. Capacity can scale from gigabytes into the petabyte range, with encryption protecting data both at rest and in transit.
Cloud Connect extends Gibtelecom infrastructure toward major hyperscale platforms through private connectivity. Supported cloud ecosystems include Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud. This is useful for hybrid and multi-cloud architectures that require more controlled connectivity than ordinary Internet routing. Cloud interconnection locations include Malta, Malaysia, Dublin and the Isle of Man.
Gibtelecom previously maintained more conventional web and email hosting products. Earlier Business Monster packages combined email accounts, web space and domain capacity, but the present infrastructure business is much more strongly focused on cloud computing, managed servers, object storage, backup, co-location and international connectivity rather than commodity Shared Hosting or low-cost VPS packages.
The group expanded its data-center activities through Rockolo Limited, established in 2016 with commercial operations beginning in 2017. Rockolo Malaysia followed in 2020 and Rockolo Malta in 2022. The Gibraltar Rockolo operation was absorbed directly into Gibtelecom in September 2023, while the Malaysian and Maltese companies remain part of the group.
The website and service information are primarily in English, while domestic pricing and billing use GBP (£). Enterprise infrastructure is generally supplied through quotations and service agreements rather than a standardized online hosting cart.
