*📜 Plan description

Starter is the entry plan for one production WordPress site. The lowest available rate is $25 per month when the subscription is billed as $300 for one year, which includes two months free compared with monthly billing. Month-to-month billing is $30. The plan supports 25,000 visits per month, 10 GB of storage, and 50 GB of monthly bandwidth. It is intended for a single business site, portfolio, blog, or compact client project that needs managed performance and workflow tools without a multi-site allowance. An additional site can be attached for $20 per month or $200 per year until moving to a larger tier becomes more economical. New eligible subscriptions have a 60-day money-back guarantee; the guarantee does not apply to upgrades or renewals.

Flywheel runs a fully managed WordPress environment on Google Cloud Platform with isolated site resources rather than conventional shared hosting. The stack combines Nginx, optimized PHP-FPM, MySQL, FlyCache server-level caching, auto-healing technology, and a Fastly-powered global CDN. Every current plan includes a free SSL certificate for each site, staging, nightly production backups retained for 30 days, one-click restores, SFTP, an SSH gateway, site cloning, Blueprints, collaboration tools, Organizations, billing transfer, plugin security alerts, and access to StudioPress themes and the Genesis Framework. WordPress core maintenance, platform security, intelligent threat blocking, malware scanning, and free malware cleanup are handled as managed services. Sites can be placed in Iowa in the United States, Montreal in Canada, London in the United Kingdom, Belgium in the European Union, or Sydney in Australia. The custom Flywheel dashboard replaces cPanel and provides site statistics, DNS and SSL management, backup controls, staging, logs, collaborators, and migration tracking. Free migrations are available for any number of WordPress sites. Support is available around the clock through live chat and in-app tickets, while eligible higher-value plans also receive weekday phone access. The Cloud Platform carries a 99.9 percent uptime commitment. Payment can be made by credit card or PayPal, and sales tax is calculated from the customer billing address and is not included at one fixed rate. Traffic and storage overages are not throttled automatically: additional visits are billed at $1 per 1,000 visits and extra storage at $1 per GB. Optional services include Performance Insights at $25 per month for the first site plus $2 for each additional site, Managed Plugin Updates from $8 per site per month, and a free Google Analytics dashboard integration.

📄 Editorial Review

Flywheel is an American managed WordPress hosting company founded in 2012 in Omaha, Nebraska, by Dusty Davidson, Tony Noecker, and Rick Knudtson. Its founders came from web development and agency backgrounds, and the platform was built specifically around the daily requirements of designers, developers, freelancers, and creative agencies.

Flywheel developed quickly during its independent period. By its fifth anniversary in 2017, the company had approximately 100 employees and more than 70,000 users. Its Omaha workforce had reached around 150 employees by October 2018, when the company prepared to move into a much larger headquarters at Millwork Commons.

WP Engine acquired Flywheel in June 2019. The purchase price remained private, while the combined organization immediately exceeded 120,000 customers worldwide. Flywheel continues to operate as a recognizable managed WordPress hosting brand, although its legal framework, enterprise services, eCommerce hosting, corporate offices, and several operational resources are integrated with WP Engine.

Flywheel remains closely associated with Omaha and falls within the 51–200 employee range on LinkedIn. The precise size of the independent Flywheel team is difficult to separate from WP Engine because the Omaha operation has functioned as part of the parent company since the acquisition. WP Engine had more than 200 employees in the Omaha area when its 66,000-square-foot office opened, with sufficient capacity for approximately 400 people.

The company concentrates entirely on managed WordPress hosting. Its environment is not intended for Joomla, Drupal, custom non-WordPress applications, Windows hosting, generic Linux hosting, unmanaged virtual servers, or customers requiring root-level system administration.

The standard hosting range includes Starter for one WordPress website, Freelance for portfolios of up to ten websites, and Agency for portfolios of up to thirty websites. Larger agencies, high-traffic publishers, online stores, and mission-critical projects can use individually configured Custom services.

Standard plans include free website migrations, SSL certificates, FlyCache, content delivery, nightly backups, staging environments, website cloning, SFTP access, SSH Gateway, collaborator accounts, billing transfers, plugin vulnerability notifications, and specialist WordPress assistance.

The hosting environment uses isolated container resources on Google Cloud Platform. Resources can be increased when a website experiences a traffic surge without moving the customer to a conventional unmanaged server. The technical stack combines NGINX, chrooted PHP-FPM, MySQL, server-level caching, and global content delivery.

FlyCache combines complete-page caching with a CDN powered by Fastly. Static assets and cached pages are delivered through a global edge network, reducing dependence on separate WordPress caching plugins and improving response times for geographically distributed visitors.

Security is integrated directly into the managed platform. The service includes encryption in transit and at rest, SSL certificates, malware detection and cleanup, intelligent IP blocking, plugin vulnerability warnings, controlled system updates, user roles, SSH access, and two-factor authentication. Nightly backups are retained for 30 days on separate infrastructure and can be restored through the hosting dashboard.

Flywheel handles major and minor WordPress core updates. Managed Plugin Updates can be purchased separately for customers requiring automated plugin maintenance, visual regression testing, and additional technical supervision.

WooCommerce hosting is supplied through WP Engine’s eCommerce platform. These packages add Instant Store Search powered by ElasticPress, WooCommerce templates, automated plugin maintenance, premium themes, daily backups, staging, SSL certificates, SSH access, and automated migration tools.

High-traffic websites and enterprise projects can also move to WP Engine’s enterprise infrastructure. Custom arrangements may include dedicated or compute-optimized resources, advanced caching, enhanced network services, personalized onboarding, technical health assessments, technical account management, customer-success assistance, and recurring service reviews.

The Agency Partner Program is designed for companies managing websites for multiple clients. It includes referral opportunities, agency directory visibility, white-label resources, training materials, networking opportunities, and development resources. Agencies may transfer hosting invoices directly to customers or continue managing billing internally. This creates a practical managed-reseller workflow without using a traditional cPanel reseller structure.

Flywheel also integrates with Local, the free desktop WordPress development application formerly known as Local by Flywheel. Developers can create and test websites locally before connecting them to a Flywheel or WP Engine hosting account.

Email mailboxes are not included with the hosting plans, so customers need a separate business email provider. Flywheel is also not a domain registrar and does not supply authoritative nameservers. Domains remain with an external registrar or DNS provider and are connected to the platform using the necessary A and CNAME records.

The website has a modern, responsive design suitable for desktop and mobile devices. Its interface, documentation, and support resources are primarily available in English, while standard hosting prices are displayed in US dollars. Final charges can vary according to server location, taxes, optional services, and account configuration.
