📄 Editorial Review
Filemail is a Norwegian cloud file-transfer and managed file-transfer provider founded in 2008 in Oslo, Norway, by Stian Tonaas Fauske and Njål Arne Gjermundshaug. Stian Tonaas Fauske remains Founder & CEO. Filemail is not a traditional web hosting company: there are no shared hosting, VPS, reseller hosting, domain registration, website-builder, or conventional dedicated-server hosting packages. Its actual specialties are Cloud Storage, Large File Transfer, Managed File Transfer (MFT), secure file sharing, and managed on-premises file-server integration. The company started with a straightforward goal: sending files too large for ordinary email without forcing the recipient through complicated FTP procedures. A paid Premium plan followed in 2009, and the business became profitable within its first 12 months. It passed three million users by 2011, introduced its multi-user Business service in 2012, launched a Windows desktop application with UDP transfer acceleration in 2013, added encrypted transfers in 2014, and released iOS and Android applications in 2016.
Global infrastructure expanded significantly in 2018. Filemail was acquired in 2020 by Jottacloud (jottacloud.com), another Norwegian cloud-storage company, while both original founders remained involved. In 2021 its northern-European servers were moved to Green Mountain in Norway, where the data-center operation runs on renewable energy. Dedicated high-speed servers for paying customers were added in 2024.
Filemail has grown into a substantial international transfer platform. Current company figures include 15 data centers worldwide, more than 50 million users since launch, about 100,000 TB transferred annually, and more than 3.5 billion files sent. Another current metric lists roughly 80 million files transferred monthly and customers in more than 190 countries.
The Basic account is permanently free and can be used for commercial as well as personal transfers. It includes 5 GB storage, transfers up to 5 GB, seven-day file availability, two transfer sessions in 24 hours, three recipients per transfer and ten downloads per transfer. Files are scanned for malware and transmission is protected with HTTPS. No credit card is required for the free account.
Personal is primarily for individuals who transfer files frequently but do not need very large individual uploads. It supports files up to 5 GB, 250 GB of cloud storage, unlimited transfers, 30-day file availability, interrupted-transfer resume, full activity tracking, file management and priority support.
Pro raises the individual transfer limit to 250 GB and includes 1 TB of storage, unlimited bandwidth and transfers, dedicated high-speed servers, receiving files, private file requests, automated downloads, password protection, a custom Filemail subdomain, and account branding. Current plan information gives Pro files permanent availability rather than the short expiration used on lower plans.
The Business service is much closer to a corporate managed file-transfer environment. It supports multiple users and administrators, files of any size, unlimited transfers and bandwidth, 1 TB storage per user, additional storage, ten file-sharing portals, website upload forms and a centralized operations dashboard. Businesses can select the region in which transferred files are stored. Security features include end-to-end encryption, encryption at rest, 2FA, SAML/SSO, audit logs, password policies and authenticated download pages.
Enterprise MFT adds customized storage and retention, premium support, configurable portals and user capacity, penetration-test reports and more extensive compliance functionality. Enterprise environments can be configured around requirements including GDPR, ISO 27001, NSM, HIPAA, SOX, FINRA, FISMA, GLBA and Cyber Essentials UK. A Data Processing Agreement and, where applicable, HIPAA BAA documentation are available.
Filemail also supports on-premises file servers for Business and Enterprise customers. In this arrangement the customer's Windows server remains physically in-house while Filemail assumes administration, maintenance, monitoring and Windows-update responsibility. The published minimum configuration is Windows Server 2008 R2 or newer, 8 GB RAM, two CPU cores, separate OS and storage disks, and HTTP/HTTPS, SNMP and RDP connectivity. This is an interesting alternative for organizations that want physical custody of their files without operating the complete transfer platform themselves.
The platform can be used through a browser, native Windows, macOS and Linux applications, Android, iPhone/iPad, a Microsoft Outlook add-in and an API. The desktop applications are particularly relevant for large transfers because Filemail uses accelerated transfer technology rather than relying exclusively on ordinary browser TCP behavior.
The website itself is modern and suitable for current desktop and mobile devices. Filemail operates a multilingual site rather than an English-only service; localized content and plan pages are available in multiple European languages, including Romanian, Polish and Portuguese among the versions verified during the review.
