📄 Editorial Review
FidoNet is a long-established British Internet, hosting, telecommunications and network-infrastructure provider operated through FidoNet Registration Services Limited. The current legal company was incorporated on August 14, 2001, while the technical history behind the Fido name reaches much further back. Founder Jon Morby was involved with computer communications in the early 1980s, operated a fidonet.org-to-Internet gateway between 1985 and 1994, later worked at Demon Internet, and established the commercial FidoNet operation in 2001. Morby sold the business in June 2019.FidoNet is considerably broader than a conventional shared-hosting company. Its portfolio covers Shared Hosting, Reseller Hosting, Cloud/VPS, Dedicated Servers, Managed Hosting, Mac Mini Hosting, Colocation, Domain Registration, SSL Certificates, Hosted Email, Anti-Spam, Anycast DNS, CDN, IP Transit, MPLS connectivity, Internet Exchange connectivity, broadband and VoIP. This combination gives the company a stronger networking and telecommunications background than providers concentrating exclusively on website hosting.
The business now uses two closely related web platforms. Fido.net covers much of the traditional ISP, network, dedicated-server, colocation, email and communications business, while Fidonet.com provides the more conventional hosting storefront and customer portal for cPanel hosting, reseller accounts, VPS/cloud services, domains, SSL certificates, billing and support.
Current shared hosting is divided into Basic Web, Business and Ultra. Basic Web includes 2.5 GB storage, 5 GB bandwidth and up to 3,000 mailboxes. Business increases capacity to 5 GB storage, 15 GB bandwidth and up to 5,000 mailboxes. Ultra supports unlimited websites and addon domains, unmetered bandwidth and unlimited MySQL databases. The environment includes cPanel, Softaculous, LiteSpeed and R1Soft backups, giving customers a familiar Linux hosting platform with automated application installation and account-level backup access.
The older Fido hosting range also includes both Linux and Windows Hosting. Basic Web provides 2.5 GB storage, 5 GB monthly transfer, five MySQL databases and a free domain registration or transfer, while Business Starter increases storage to 5 GB, transfer to 15 GB and MySQL databases to 100. Windows-oriented options include ASP, Microsoft SQL Server and Access support, while the Linux environment covers PHP, MySQL, Perl and Python. Some specifications in this part of the service date from an older generation of hosting technology, including references to Microsoft FrontPage, so customers requiring Windows hosting should confirm the currently available Windows stack before ordering.
Reseller Hosting uses cPanel and WHM, together with Softaculous, LiteSpeed and R1Soft backups. Plans start with relatively small allocations and scale upward to packages with considerably larger resources and unmetered traffic. Higher reseller levels also include WHMCS licensing. The reseller range works well for developers, web designers and small hosting businesses wanting to manage multiple independent customer accounts.
Virtual servers are available using KVM and OpenVZ. Published configurations extend to approximately 250 GB storage, 8 GB RAM and eight virtual CPU cores, depending on the plan. Full root access is included, and the server range accommodates Linux, Windows and BSD environments where applicable. These services sit between ordinary shared hosting and the more powerful dedicated-server range.
Dedicated hosting is one of the stronger parts of the portfolio. Configurations range from entry-level Intel servers through larger systems with multiprocessor CPUs, substantial memory, RAID 5, RAID 6 or RAID 50 storage and multiple Gigabit Ethernet interfaces. Windows and Linux operating systems are supported, while database workloads can include MySQL, PostgreSQL, Microsoft SQL Server and Oracle. Managed administration is available for customers who do not want to handle operating-system maintenance, updates and routine security administration themselves.
FidoNet also has an unusual Mac Mini Hosting service. Customers can colocate their own Mac Mini hardware with a dedicated network connection, web-based remote reboot capability, bandwidth statistics and optional backup/storage services. Standard connectivity includes a 100 Mbps uplink, with faster Gigabit and 10 Gigabit options available. Managed assistance and Time Machine-compatible storage can also be added.
Email services extend well beyond ordinary POP3 and IMAP mailboxes. Fido Glide combines hosted email with calendars, contacts, Outlook integration, ActiveSync/EWS, mobile synchronization, archiving, compliance retention, online file storage and integrations with business applications such as Salesforce and SugarCRM. Fido Guard handles inbound and outbound anti-spam and antivirus filtering and can sit in front of Exchange, cPanel, Plesk, Lotus Notes and other mail platforms. Optional archiving makes it suitable for businesses needing longer-term message retention.
The networking portfolio includes IP Transit from smaller 10 Mbps commitments through multi-gigabit connections, BGP routing, IPv4 and IPv6 addressing, MPLS connectivity, Internet Exchange access, colocation and global content-delivery services. Anycast DNS and CDN infrastructure extends across multiple international locations, including London, Brighton, Paris, Frankfurt, Miami, New York, Tokyo, Sydney, Moscow, Silicon Valley and Seattle.
The company retains some very old service information alongside its current hosting platform. In particular, the colocation section still contains a 2018 price list and even older promotional references, while portions of the shared-hosting information come from an earlier generation of Windows and Linux hosting. Fidonet.com is much more current, although several commercial and contractual details do not always align perfectly between the two environments. For long-term hosting, server or colocation commitments, the exact current specification and contract applicable to the selected service should therefore be established before payment.
FidoNet Registration Services Limited remains registered in the United Kingdom. Its current Companies House status is Active — Active proposal to strike off, with overdue statutory filings including accounts and a confirmation statement. Joseph Waite has served as a director since October 10, 2022 and is also associated with Bink Group. The historical Fido network, particularly AS8282, is now associated with Bink Group Ltd while continuing to originate legacy FidoNet address space. This corporate and network transition is important for customers considering substantial prepaid contracts, dedicated infrastructure or colocation.
