📄 Editorial Review

ExpressVPN is a long-established privacy and cybersecurity provider focused on encrypted internet access rather than traditional web hosting. Its main service is a premium VPN, complemented by password management, private email relay, dedicated IP addresses, identity-protection tools, private AI services, VPN-enabled routers, and a business-oriented Teams product.

Founded in 2009 by Peter Burchhardt and Dan Pomerantz, ExpressVPN operates through Express Technologies Ltd. in the British Virgin Islands. The company became part of Kape Technologies (kape.com) in December 2021, following an acquisition valued at approximately US$936 million. ExpressVPN continues to operate under its established brand and BVI-based service structure.

The core ExpressVPN service creates an encrypted connection between a user's device and its VPN infrastructure, masking the original public IP address and protecting internet traffic from local network monitoring. Applications are available for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, routers, Apple TV, Android TV, Fire TV, browsers, and other supported platforms.

A major technical component is Lightway, ExpressVPN's own open-source VPN protocol. It is designed for rapid connection establishment, efficient mobile operation, and quick reconnection when moving between Wi-Fi and cellular networks. Lightway has been re-engineered in Rust and incorporates post-quantum protection. WireGuard is also supported with additional post-quantum protection on compatible platforms.

Security functions include Network Lock, which acts as a kill switch if the VPN connection unexpectedly drops, together with split tunneling on supported platforms, DNS-leak protection, automatic server selection, connection diagnostics, malicious-site blocking, ad blocking, tracker protection, and filtering of adult-content domains.

Privacy remains one of the strongest parts of the service. ExpressVPN follows a no activity and no connection logs policy covering browsing history, traffic destinations, DNS requests, source IP addresses, assigned VPN IP addresses, connection timestamps, and session duration. Its operating architecture is designed to minimize retained information that could associate VPN activity with an individual account.

The subscription range is divided into Basic, Advanced, and Express Pro. Basic concentrates on the VPN itself, allowing up to 10 simultaneous device connections and including Lite Protection against malicious websites, ads, and adult content. It also provides limited ExpressMailGuard functionality and allows a dedicated IP to be purchased separately.

Advanced increases the simultaneous VPN allowance to 12 devices and adds more privacy tools, including tracker blocking, the ExpressKeys password manager, and expanded ExpressMailGuard functionality. It is the most balanced package for users wanting more than the basic VPN without moving to the complete security bundle.

Express Pro supports up to 14 simultaneous VPN connections and includes the broadest feature set. A dedicated IP is included, along with ExpressKeys, expanded ExpressMailGuard capabilities, ExpressAI, and additional Identity Defender protection for eligible customers in the United States.

ExpressMailGuard provides private email aliases that forward messages to an existing mailbox. This makes it possible to register for websites, shops, newsletters, and online services without repeatedly exposing a permanent personal email address. Higher service levels support more sophisticated alias management, sending and replying through aliases, dedicated subdomains, and custom-domain functionality.

ExpressKeys is a zero-knowledge password manager covering passwords, passkeys, secure notes, payment-card details, and two-factor authentication codes. Information is encrypted before it reaches the service, keeping the contents inaccessible without the user's credentials. It is included with Advanced and Express Pro.

ExpressAI extends the company's privacy model to artificial intelligence. It operates through isolated confidential-computing environments intended to keep conversations private while providing AI assistance, file uploads, and web-enabled functionality. Access is included with Express Pro within the applicable usage limits.

Identity Defender adds identity and fraud-monitoring services for eligible U.S. customers. Depending on the subscription, functions can include dark-web monitoring, identity monitoring, Social Security number monitoring, change-of-address alerts, credit-related monitoring, automated removal from data brokers, title monitoring, and identity-theft insurance. The most extensive features are included with Express Pro.

A Dedicated IP gives a subscriber an IP address reserved for their own use rather than one shared among many VPN customers. ExpressVPN uses a zero-knowledge allocation approach that separates the dedicated IP from the ordinary account database. Access is protected by a separate code, which also means the customer needs to retain that code carefully.

ExpressVPN for Teams adapts the service for businesses and organizations. It starts from a minimum of five licenses and supports monthly, 12-month, and 24-month subscriptions. Administrators receive a separate management environment for licenses, users, billing, reassignment of seats, and organizational access. SCIM integration is available for more automated user provisioning, while dedicated IP functionality can provide a consistent address for corporate access-control and IP-whitelisting requirements.

ExpressVPN also offers its VPN technology through Aircove and Aircove Go routers. Aircove is a Wi-Fi 6 router with ExpressVPN integrated into the firmware, allowing devices such as televisions, game consoles, IoT hardware, and other equipment without native VPN support to use VPN protection through the router. Coverage reaches approximately 1,600 sq. ft./150 sq. m.

Aircove Go is a smaller travel-oriented model. It can connect to an upstream Wi-Fi network and then provide VPN-protected connectivity to the user's own devices, making it particularly useful in hotels, temporary accommodation, and other situations where Ethernet access may not be available. An active ExpressVPN subscription is required for the VPN functions of both routers.

Another related service is EventVPN, developed by the ExpressVPN team for Apple's ecosystem. It provides a simpler VPN product with a free privacy-oriented tier and a paid Premium level. EventVPN remains a separate subscription and should not be confused with the main ExpressVPN service.

Localization is extensive. The website supports English together with localized versions in languages including Spanish, German, French, Arabic, Bulgarian, Czech, Danish, Greek, Finnish, Hebrew, Croatian, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Dutch, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Swedish, Thai, Turkish, Ukrainian, Vietnamese, and Serbian. Application language availability varies somewhat by operating system.
