Exoscale is a Swiss European cloud provider operated by Akenes SA, a private company headquartered in Lausanne, Switzerland and founded in 2011. It is not a classic low-cost shared hosting company built around cPanel, reseller hosting, cheap domain bundles, or beginner website-builder packages. Their profile is much closer to a sovereign European cloud platform for developers, DevOps teams, SaaS projects, data engineering, AI workloads, and companies that want infrastructure hosted under European data-residency rules.

The company is part of A1 Digital (a1.digital), which belongs to A1 Telekom Austria Group (a1.group). This gives Exoscale stronger corporate backing than many independent cloud startups, while the brand itself remains positioned as a European alternative to larger U.S. hyperscale clouds. The management team includes Mathias Nöbauer as CEO, Antoine Coetsier as COO, and Bruno Renié as CTO.

The product line is broad and infrastructure-oriented. Compute Instances are KVM-based cloud servers with Linux, Windows, and OpenBSD templates, plus Standard, CPU Optimized, Memory Optimized, Storage Optimized, and GPU instance families. The platform also includes Managed Kubernetes / SKS, DBaaS, Object Storage, Block Storage, GPU Servers, Concrete AI, Networking, Private Networks, Elastic IP, Network Load Balancer, Security Groups, Cloud DNS, and CDN.

For application teams, Exoscale is strongest when used as a cloud-native environment rather than as a simple web hosting account. Compute integrates with API, CLI, Terraform, Ansible, cloud-init, SSH keys, snapshots, instance pools, anti-affinity groups, IAM, private networking, and load balancing. Managed databases cover PostgreSQL, MySQL, OpenSearch, Valkey, Apache Kafka, and other data services, with features such as automated backups, high availability, failover, and scaling. Their AI/GPU side includes NVIDIA GPU instances and dedicated inference infrastructure for machine learning, AI, rendering, HPC, and vector-database workloads.

DNS is operated through Exoscale’s cloud DNS service and powered by DNSimple. CDN delivery uses the Akamai network, which gives Exoscale customers access to a much larger global edge network than Exoscale’s own cloud regions alone.

Exoscale is therefore best understood as a European cloud hosting provider, not as a traditional shared-hosting provider. Customers looking for one-click cPanel hosting, bundled email hosting, mass-market WordPress hosting, or drag-and-drop website building will probably find it too technical. Customers needing European cloud servers, Kubernetes, managed databases, object storage, GPU compute, predictable billing, and strong jurisdictional control will find a much better match.
