📄 Editorial Review

EthicalHost is a Canadian green web hosting company based in Toronto and operated by Ethical Web Services Inc. The business dates to 2006, with John MacKenzie associated with the company from its early years as founder and president. EthicalHost remains a small, independently operated provider focused on conventional hosting, environmental responsibility, nonprofits, small organizations and business websites.

Environmental and social commitments have been part of the company since its early years. 5% of profits are allocated to social, environmental and other nonprofit organizations, while registered nonprofit organizations and charities can receive a recurring 10% discount on shared hosting. Renewable-energy purchases and carbon offsets are used to compensate for the environmental impact of the hosting operation. Partners in this area include Bullfrog Power (bullfrogpower.com) and Climate Impact Partners (climateimpact.com).

The main service is Linux Shared Hosting, with Small, Bronze, Silver and Gold plans, together with Bronze Plus and Silver Plus variants in the billing system. Small includes 500 MB SSD storage, 2 GB monthly transfer, one email account, one hosted domain and one database. Bronze increases capacity to 5 GB SSD storage, 30 GB transfer, 15 email accounts, five hosted domains and five databases. Silver provides 10 GB SSD storage, 50 GB transfer, 30 email accounts, 15 hosted domains and ten databases, while Gold includes 20 GB SSD storage, 100 GB transfer, unlimited email accounts, 30 hosted domains and 20 databases.

Hosting accounts include Let's Encrypt SSL certificates, ModSecurity firewall protection, malware and exploit scanning, offsite backups, spam filtering, SPF and DKIM support, FTP access, databases and cron jobs. Softaculous is included for application deployment, making it easy to install platforms such as WordPress, Drupal, Joomla and Moodle.

The Kopage Website Builder is integrated with cPanel and provides a drag-and-drop interface for creating responsive websites without manually working with HTML or a CMS. Unlimited pages can be created, making it suitable for smaller company websites, associations and personal projects.

A separate WordPress Update & Security Monitoring service is available for customers who want ongoing WordPress maintenance. It includes an initial security audit, security configuration, CleanTalk, weekly plugin monitoring and upgrades, WordPress core updates and corrective work when an update causes WordPress or a plugin to stop functioning. Custom theme updates require a separate arrangement.

Reseller Hosting is available for agencies, developers and customers managing multiple websites. Reseller Small includes 4 GB storage, 40 GB bandwidth, custom nameservers and up to 15 hosted accounts. Reseller 1 increases this to 25 GB storage and 250 GB bandwidth, while Reseller 2 provides 100 GB storage and 350 GB bandwidth. Larger reseller packages can include a free domain when prepaid semiannually or annually. A Reseller Mini option is intended for up to five hosted sites.

Customers needing substantially more resources can use Elastic Sites. ElasticSite3 provides three CPU cores, 6 GB RAM and 25 GB storage, together with the protections of the shared hosting environment and optional SSH access. Elastic Sites function as an intermediate option between ordinary shared hosting and a conventional VPS. EthicalHost does not maintain a standard unmanaged VPS catalog, dedicated-server range or Windows hosting line.

A separate Hosted E-Mail platform provides up to 10 GB storage per mailbox, spam and virus filtering, webmail, blacklist and whitelist management, file storage and file-sharing functionality. A 20 GB mailbox upgrade is also available. The email platform has used EmailArray since 2021 and supports encrypted IMAP and SMTP connectivity.

Domain Registration covers extensions including .com, .ca, .org, .net, .co, .me, .tv, .earth, .eco and .coop, with additional extensions available when required. Whois privacy is included with some extensions and offered as a paid option for others. Eligible domain transfers normally extend the registration by another year according to the rules of the corresponding registry.

Free Let's Encrypt SSL certificates cover normal website encryption requirements. Paid SSL certificates are also available, including RapidSSL domain-validation products, RapidSSL Wildcard and organization-validated InstantSSL certificates.

EthicalHost also provides web design and SEO services, with WordPress forming an important part of its managed website work. Combined with Kopage, Softaculous, cPanel hosting and WordPress maintenance, this gives smaller organizations the option to keep hosting, website creation and maintenance with the same provider.

The website is primarily available in English, and no complete multi-language/localized version exists. Prices are denominated in Canadian dollars (CAD). Some older informational content retains previous prices or technical references, while the billing system carries the current order values, so checkout pricing is the appropriate reference when purchasing a service.
