Datacom is one of Australasia’s longest-established technology and infrastructure companies. The business began in 1965 in Christchurch, New Zealand, when Dr Bernard Battersby and Paul Hargreaves founded Computer Bureau Limited. Expansion followed into Wellington, Hamilton and Auckland, the Datacom Group holding company was formed in 1971, and the business adopted the Datacom name in 1984.

Today, Datacom remains locally owned and operates on a scale far beyond a conventional hosting provider. It has almost 6,000 employees across Australia, New Zealand and Asia, operates 32 offices, and reported NZ$1.58 billion in FY26 revenue for the financial year ending 31 March 2026. Its hosting and infrastructure business is primarily suited to enterprises, public-sector organisations, regulated industries and companies with demanding availability, security or data-sovereignty requirements.

The hosting portfolio is focused on cloud infrastructure, private and hybrid cloud, sovereign cloud, colocation, high-density computing, managed infrastructure, storage, backup and disaster recovery rather than ordinary shared hosting. Traditional retail Linux hosting packages, low-cost VPS plans, domain-registration bundles and instant dedicated-server packages are not part of the core service model.

The Public Cloud business covers architecture, migration, landing zones, FinOps, governance, monitoring and ongoing management across AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud. Datacom has substantial partner credentials across all three platforms, including AWS Premier Consulting Partner status and Microsoft Azure Expert MSP capability. Customers can combine the initial migration work with continuous platform operations, cost optimization, compliance and security management.

Hybrid and Private Cloud is particularly suitable where workloads cannot be placed entirely in hyperscale public-cloud environments. Hosted private environments can operate alongside public-cloud capacity, with both dedicated and multi-tenant configurations available. Sovereign infrastructure is especially useful for government, healthcare, finance and other regulated sectors where local data residency is essential.

The Hybrid Cloud Management Platform combines private infrastructure and public cloud resources while supporting virtual machines, containers and GPU-enabled workloads. Capacity can extend into AWS or Azure when additional resources are required. Both consumption-based and reserved-resource arrangements are available, giving organisations flexibility for variable workloads while preserving more predictable options for steady infrastructure demand.

Storage as a Service provides sovereign cloud storage on a consumption basis, allowing capacity to scale without purchasing storage hardware in advance. Dedicated Storage as a Service is available where physically dedicated enterprise storage is necessary. It includes 24/7 monitoring and incident management, regular hardware refreshes, and deployment options inside a Datacom facility, the customer's own premises or another suitable data centre.

For artificial intelligence and compute-intensive projects, the Private AI Platform provides dedicated GPU-powered infrastructure hosted in Australian data centres. GPU resources can be consumed by full card or smaller allocations and charged hourly, monthly or fractionally. Managed Kubernetes, AI-ready storage, MLOps capabilities, identity controls and sovereign data residency make this considerably more specialized than an ordinary GPU VPS service.

The Container Service provides managed container infrastructure for application environments, including GPU-accelerated artificial intelligence and machine-learning workloads. Sovereign deployments are also available where local data residency is required.

Backup services cover Backup as a Service, immutable storage, hybrid and multi-cloud backup, disaster recovery, anomaly detection and ransomware-resistant storage. These services are supported by managed monitoring and recovery operations rather than functioning merely as raw backup capacity.

Datacom’s Colocation Hosting ranges from individual rack units and quarter racks through half racks, full racks, multi-rack deployments, private data floors and customized environments. The infrastructure supports enterprise customers, SaaS providers, cloud companies, resellers, hyperscale projects and international organisations establishing infrastructure in Australia or New Zealand.

High-density hosting is another major capability. Datacom can accommodate racks reaching 150 kW, direct liquid cooling, liquid-to-chip systems, hybrid air/liquid cooling and multi-megawatt installations for GPU clusters, AI infrastructure and other high-performance computing workloads.

Managed services extend beyond the data-centre environment to IT operations, managed LAN/WAN, service desk, infrastructure monitoring, security, patching and incident management. This makes it possible to combine physical colocation, private infrastructure, public-cloud integration, networking and day-to-day managed operations through a single provider.

The service portfolio is localized for Australia and New Zealand, with English-language content for both markets. Infrastructure contracts and cloud deployments are generally configured individually rather than purchased through a conventional retail hosting cart with selectable currencies.
