Contabo is a German cloud hosting and infrastructure provider founded in 2003 by Michael Herpich and Michael Bölke. The business started in Munich under the Go-International name, later became Giga-International, and adopted the Contabo brand in 2013.The company’s international expansion accelerated after Oakley Capital invested in 2019. In June 2022, KKR became the majority investor in a transaction valued at approximately $1.2 billion, while Oakley retained a minority interest.
Contabo has grown from a regional German provider into an international infrastructure company serving more than 200,000 customers. Its systems host hundreds of thousands of virtual and physical servers, supported by a workforce in the 201–500 employee range.
Traditional shared hosting is no longer the main focus. The portfolio now centers on Cloud VPS, Storage VPS, Cloud VDS, Dedicated Servers, Windows Servers, GPU Cloud, Object Storage, domains, DNS management, backups, private networking, monitoring, firewalls, and one-click application deployment.
The standard Cloud VPS range combines AMD processors with either high-speed NVMe storage or larger SSD capacity. Even the entry-level configurations provide generous memory, storage, and traffic allocations compared with many similarly priced virtual servers. Root access, IPv4 and IPv6 connectivity, unmetered incoming traffic, substantial outgoing traffic, DDoS protection, firewall management, reinstall options, and several operating-system choices are included.
These VPS plans work well for websites, development environments, databases, game servers, VPN gateways, remote desktops, mail systems, Docker containers, staging platforms, and small business applications. Linux distributions are available alongside Windows Server configurations for customers requiring Remote Desktop or Microsoft-based software.
Storage VPS packages follow the same virtual-server concept but prioritize disk capacity over raw compute performance. They are practical for backup repositories, file servers, media libraries, archives, synchronization services, and other workloads that need large SSD allocations without the expense of dedicated hardware.
Cloud VDS provides dedicated CPU resources, dedicated memory, NVMe storage, root access, and rapid provisioning. It fills the space between ordinary shared-vCPU hosting and a physical dedicated server. The service is suitable for databases, busy websites, software-development systems, production containers, and business applications that need more stable processing performance.
The Dedicated Server portfolio includes modern AMD Ryzen hardware with exclusive processor, memory, and storage resources. RAM, storage, operating systems, backup options, and control-panel licenses can be customized during ordering. These servers are appropriate for high-traffic websites, virtualization, databases, large online stores, private-cloud environments, and applications where predictable performance is essential.
Contabo also operates a specialized GPU Cloud platform using NVIDIA hardware such as the L40S and RTX 5000 PRO. These systems target artificial intelligence, machine learning, model inference, rendering, computer vision, scientific processing, and graphics-intensive applications. Dedicated and virtualized GPU options are available, with pricing oriented toward professional and commercial workloads.
The Object Storage platform is S3-compatible and includes free outgoing data transfer, encryption, scalable capacity, and compatibility with common S3 applications. It can be connected through AWS CLI, rclone, Cyberduck, s3fs, WinSCP, Nextcloud, and other compatible tools. Typical uses include backups, software distribution, media storage, application assets, archives, and log retention.
The Object Storage platform uses Ceph and supports individual objects up to 5 TB. API, bandwidth, bucket, and object limits apply, so organizations handling unusually intensive storage operations should confirm whether the default limits meet their requirements.
One-click deployment is available for applications including n8n, Nextcloud, WireGuard, GitLab Community Edition, Dokploy, Coolify, OpenClaw, Hermes AI, Paperclip AI, and Ollama-based AI environments. Deployment does not add a separate application installation charge, although the underlying VPS or VDS remains a paid service.
Domain registration and transfers are handled through the Customer Panel. Customers can manage nameservers, DNS records, domain contacts, redirects, and assignments to Contabo or external server addresses. Domains complement the infrastructure portfolio, although the company is now much more strongly focused on cloud servers than on conventional shared-hosting packages.
The website, ordering platform, help center, and customer account are available in English, German, and Spanish. Billing supports EUR, USD, and GBP, with available payment methods varying by currency and customer location.
Most Contabo infrastructure is self-managed. Do not host your public sites on Contabo server, they have the worst TTBF ever in the market. They also have weird policies. I paid for a year, cancelled on their dashboard within 14 days, waited 8-10 days for refund, but did not receive a refund. Upon reaching out to customer care, they said their policy states that just cancellation is not enough, the customer has to send them a refund request in a prescribed format either via a mailed letter, a fax, or email. C'mon, which year are they living in?
Anyhow I lost the money 1 year subscription money. They lost a customer forever. I still have my ERP instance running on contabo. I am waiting for the contract period to end to switch back to GCP.
Here is the story about TTBF.
On recommendation from an ERP consultant, we moved our ERP from Google Cloud VM to a Contabo server. Everything seemed fine. But few of our employees complained that the ERP has become a bit slower. I dint give it much concern.
Later that month, we decided to move our public wordpress site to contabo's server. Our website have a very minimum traffic, approximately 1000 to 2000 vistors per month. But the website was loading very slow. When we checked the GTMetrix it showed that TTBF was above 3500 ms. Originally our total load time used to be only 280 ms. To make sure it is not an issue with our theme and plugins, we tried a plain installation of wordpress on contabo, digital ocean and google cloud. All on their chepest servers. Digital ocean and google cloud servers selected for testing was on a fraction of the specification of contabo servers. We discovered that there was some real issues with Contabo server, because DO and Google Cloud was delivering TTBF below 80 ms. I read online and found that this was a common issue with Contabo and they were also throttling disk IO. It was hardly 5 to 7 days since we purchased the server and I had read that they had a 14 days refund policy. We had paid for an entire year. We immediately cancelled the services and waited for the refund to happen. It never happened.

😠 Contabo is a Very Bad Service Provider.
They have Just Low Price and have Zero Value of Data.
One of my Server from Contabo has made ofline by the Contabo Team by telling that, their is some Technical Error.
but, after 6 hours, they sent an Email Stating that, their Server has Crashed and Whole Data Have Lost.
They are Not Giving any Compensation, but Just Sending apology Emails.
If you Host on Contabo, Think 10 Times!
