📄 Editorial Review

BlueGenesis is a Canadian web hosting company with roots going back to 1999, giving the brand more than two decades of experience in hosting, domains, email and online services for small and medium-sized businesses. Its product range has traditionally focused on customers who want several essential internet services under one account rather than developer-oriented cloud infrastructure.

BlueGenesis became part of Hostopia (hostopia.com), a Canadian web-services platform later acquired by Deluxe Corporation (deluxe.com) in August 2008. Deluxe paid approximately US$99.4 million net of acquired cash for Hostopia. Later that year, BlueGenesis acquired the web hosting and domain business operating as EasyHosting from Look Communications for approximately C$3.8 million, together with a long-term marketing and licensing arrangement.

Another major ownership change followed on June 29, 2023, when HostPapa completed its acquisition of Deluxe Corporation's web hosting and logo-design businesses. BlueGenesis consequently became part of the HostPapa corporate family, while BlueGenesis.com Corp. continues to appear as the business identity associated with the service.

The main hosting offer is Cloud Hosting, although these packages function much more like conventional clustered shared hosting than VPS-style cloud servers. Basic provides 6 GB of website storage, 600 GB of monthly data transfer and 30 email accounts. Intermediate increases the limits to 12 GB of storage, 900 GB of transfer and 45 email accounts, while Business includes 24 GB of storage, 1,200 GB of transfer and 60 email accounts. Each mailbox includes 3 GB of email storage.

Hosting accounts include Website Creator, more than 175 templates, Webmail, POP3 and IMAP access, website backups, domain-based email, web analytics and MySQL database management. Popular applications including WordPress, Joomla and phpBB are also supported. Email data transfer is unlimited, while individual attachments are limited to 25 MB. Hosting accounts are provisioned immediately, and customers can move between plans when their requirements change.

The clustered hosting architecture spreads services across multiple systems rather than relying entirely on a single conventional server. RAID storage, redundant routing, load balancing and failover mechanisms add resilience, while security is applied through server, router and load-balancer firewalls together with hardened operating systems.

Domain Registration is another core service, covering new registrations, renewals, transfers and ongoing domain administration. Transfers use EPP authorization codes where required, and standard registry restrictions apply to recently registered or transferred domains, locked names and domains already entering redemption or deletion stages. Automatic renewal can be enabled from the management environment, while domain pointing and domain parking are also available.

The domain selection includes familiar extensions such as .com, .net, .org, .ca, .biz, .info, .name, .us and .cc. This makes BlueGenesis particularly relevant to Canadian businesses that want hosting and .ca registration managed from the same provider.

The bundled Website Creator is designed for customers who prefer to build a website without programming. It uses drag-and-drop editing with responsive templates and previews for desktop, tablet and mobile devices. Pages can contain text, images, galleries, video, menus, maps and other common website elements. Having the builder included with hosting keeps basic website creation relatively simple for small companies that do not need a custom development stack.

Business Email can also be purchased independently. Email 10, Email 100 and Email 1000 packages serve organizations of different sizes, with each mailbox receiving 3 GB of storage. The service supports POP, IMAP and Webmail, together with spam filtering, automatic virus scanning, forwarding, aliases, autoresponders, contact management, calendars, notes and task management. External accounts such as Gmail and Outlook can also be connected through Webmail.

The email platform benefits from the same clustered and redundant infrastructure used elsewhere in the service and carries a 99.9% availability target.

Fax to Email remains an unusual addition to the portfolio and can still be useful for businesses that exchange documents with organizations relying on traditional fax communication. Customers receive a North American toll-free fax number and can send and receive faxes electronically without maintaining a physical fax line. An online management interface handles fax activity, while received and sent fax information is retained online for a limited period.

BlueGenesis also offers SSL Certificates for website encryption. Options include standard certificates, wildcard coverage and higher-validation products. Common features include 256-bit encryption, compatibility with major browsers and mobile devices, site seals, renewal reminders and certificate reissue. SSL purchases receive a 30-day refund period.

There is no standard self-service VPS or dedicated-server range alongside the current shared hosting products. BlueGenesis is therefore better suited to customers needing domains, websites, email and business-oriented hosting than to administrators requiring root access, custom operating systems or configurable virtual and physical server infrastructure.

The website operates primarily in English, and no multi-language/localized version exists. The interface itself is responsive and suitable for modern displays, but parts of the current storefront contain broken pricing variables and unrelated injected content. Those problems do not necessarily reflect the condition of the underlying hosting platform, but they reduce confidence in the maintenance of the customer-facing website and should be addressed by the company.
