4shared is a long-running cloud storage and file-sharing service founded in 2005. Alex Lunkov is associated with the company as founder and co-owner, while Sergey Chudnovsky was also part of its early leadership. The service is currently operated by New IT Ltd, a Cyprus company registered in Nicosia under Company No. HE 246188 and VAT No. CY10246188A.

Although 4shared has traditionally appeared in web-hosting directories, it is not a conventional shared hosting provider. There are no Linux or Windows shared hosting plans with PHP, databases and email accounts, nor VPS or dedicated server products. Its main service is an online virtual drive for uploading, storing, downloading and sharing files. Music, videos, photographs, documents, archives and other file types can be organized into folders and accessed through a browser or supported transfer protocols.

The free account provides 15 GB of cloud storage with a maximum individual upload size of 2 GB. Free users need to log in at least once every 180 days; inactive accounts can be removed together with their stored data. This makes the free service better suited to active storage and file sharing than unattended long-term archiving.

4shared Premium now offers three storage capacities: 100 GB, 500 GB and 1 TB. Premium users can upload individual files as large as 100 GB and receive ad-free access, direct download links, file and account statistics, backup and recovery functions, Premium support and additional analytics. The 500 GB and 1 TB packages also include multi-file uploading and downloading. Premium accounts currently include a 100 GB monthly traffic allowance, which is an important consideration for customers distributing large files to many users.

One of the more distinctive functions is Sub-Domain Folder Mapping. Shared folders can use aliases such as FolderName.4shared.com, giving public folders a cleaner address than a standard sharing URL. Free accounts support up to 20 sub-domain mappings, while Premium accounts can use up to 100. This can be useful for distributing static content, although it remains a file-sharing function rather than conventional website hosting.

Premium customers can manage files through FTP at ftp.4shared.com and SFTP at sftp.4shared.com. WebDAV access is also available through webdav.4shared.com, allowing the account to work more like a remotely mounted storage folder. FTP, SFTP and WebDAV make 4shared considerably more flexible for bulk transfers than file-sharing platforms that depend entirely on browser uploads.

The browser interface includes hierarchical folders, drag-and-drop file management, file moves and copies, ZIP handling, text-file editing, media previews, audio and video streaming, sharing links, password protection for shared folders, private-file controls and recovery functions. Direct download URLs and embedded content are especially useful for publishers and website owners who need an external location for distributing files.

Security includes encrypted connections, password-protected shared folders, public and private access controls, databases separated behind multiple firewalls and regular database backups. Physical infrastructure protections include controlled data-center access, biometric identification, CCTV, redundant power supplies and redundant network interfaces.

The service has broad international localization. The interface supports English, German, Hindi, Russian, Korean, Indonesian, Malay, Portuguese (Brazil), Italian, French, Spanish, Chinese, Arabic, Vietnamese, Thai, Ukrainian, Japanese, Tagalog, Persian, Polish and Turkish. English is fully supported, while commercial pricing is primarily displayed in USD.

An Enterprise option is also available for organizations requiring a customized implementation. Enterprise deployments can include additional internal access controls and customer-specific security restrictions.
