1st Domains is an established New Zealand domain registrar and web hosting provider operating since 2003. The company is an authorized .nz registrar and forms part of Voyager (voyager.nz), a New Zealand-owned telecommunications, cloud, hosting and infrastructure group founded by Seeby Woodhouse.

The company manages more than 130,000 domain names for over 30,000 customers and handles a significant share of new .nz registrations. Its operations are based in Christchurch, with additional technical and commercial resources available through the wider Voyager organization in Auckland and Wellington.

Domain registration remains the core business. Customers can register New Zealand domains such as .nz, .co.nz, .net.nz and .org.nz, together with international and country-code extensions including .com, .net, .org, .kiwi, .ai, .com.au and .co.uk. Bulk searches can process as many as 50 names at once, while the Domain Genie assists customers who need ideas for a suitable domain.

Domain management includes WHOIS tools, bulk transfers, renewals, registrant-contact administration and access to an expired-domain marketplace for released or expiring .nz names. Transfers normally preserve the remaining registration period, with .nz transfers usually completed immediately and international extensions taking longer.

Managed domains include email forwarding, web redirection, masked forwarding, domain parking, DNS zone management, .nz domain locking, bulk changes and two-factor authentication. Premium DNS uses the global Anycast network of Cloudflare, adding distributed DNS resolution and DDoS protection.

It is intended for one personal, business or WordPress website and includes unmetered storage, unmetered traffic, MySQL databases, FTP access, cron jobs, visitor statistics, multiple PHP versions, MariaDB, SSL certificates and malware scanning. WordPress, Joomla and other applications can be installed directly from the hosting control panel.

WordPress hosting uses the same underlying No Limits platform rather than a separate managed WordPress infrastructure. The integrated WordPress Toolkit provides one-click installation, cloning, staging, update management, security checks and controlled deployment of changes from a test environment to the live website.

The unlimited-resource wording is governed by shared-hosting fair-use restrictions. Each subscription supports only one website, while subdomains and domain aliases are unavailable. The service is not intended for file distribution, remote backup storage, large download repositories, resource-intensive applications or exceptionally busy websites.

Individual FTP uploads are limited to 5 GB, with daily upload and download allowances of 10 GB each. PHP scripts receive 128 MB of memory by default. These limits are reasonable for an ordinary company website or WordPress installation but can become restrictive for larger databases, media-heavy projects or custom applications.

Email mailboxes are sold separately from web hosting. Customers that do not require full mailboxes can use the included forwarding service, while the paid professional email platform supports POP3, secure POP3, IMAP, secure IMAP, authenticated SMTP, webmail, aliases, forwarding, autoresponders, quotas and server-side filters.

SpamExperts filtering protects the email platform against spam, phishing, malware, ransomware and infected attachments. Messages can include attachments of up to 40 MB, and plans are available for small teams as well as organizations requiring many mailboxes and large shared storage allocations.

Customers needing more power can move to infrastructure supplied by Voyager. Available services include VPS, Virtual Data Centre, dedicated servers and colocation. These services remain within the same New Zealand corporate group but are contracted and administered through Voyager rather than the standard 1st Domains hosting account.

Voyager VPS plans use KVM virtualization and include full root access, SSD storage, operating-system templates, Cloud-init, API access and unmetered national and international traffic. Entry-level configurations begin with one virtual processor, 1 GB of memory and 15 GB of SSD storage.

The Virtual Data Centre platform adds scalable processor and memory resources, private networking, microsegmentation, load balancing, site-to-site VPN connectivity, high availability and AES-256 storage encryption. It is better suited to companies requiring several virtual machines or a structured private-cloud environment.

Dedicated servers provide single-tenant hardware, administrator access, selectable Windows or Unix operating systems and unmetered bandwidth subject to fair use. These servers are unmanaged, leaving operating-system maintenance, patching, application administration, security and backups under the customer’s control.

Colocation is available for individual devices and quarter-, half- or full-rack deployments. This gives New Zealand companies a local option for housing owned hardware without maintaining a private server room.
