Jun 17, 2004 : SimpleNet Withstands 5.3 Quake
📅 - SimpleNet (simplenet.com), a provider of Web hosting, domain management, email, and data center services, said on Thursday easily withstood a 5.3 magnitude earthquake. The San Diego region trembled violently for a few seconds at approximately 3:30 p.m. Wednesday. The United States Geological Society reported that the moderate quake registered 5.3 on the Richter scale, centered 49 miles west-southwest of San Diego and 52 miles from the coast of Rosarito Beach in Mexico. Although the quake's epicenter was beneath the ocean floor, experts said that was no threat of a tsunami hitting the coastline of California.
"This is a testament to the solid, secure data center that we?ve built here in San Diego," said Simplenet President John Killian. "We've made sure that our equipment is able to withstand these possibilities, which equates to our customers experiencing zero downtime."
However, the company did experience a huge jump in bandwidth, as those searching for more information on the quake flocked to its news-related colocation customers.
