Aug 20, 2004 : Hosts May Consider IPOs, Netcraft Says
📅 - A report published by research and analysis firm Netcraft (netcraft.com) speculates that some of the leading Web hosting companies may yet contemplate going public in light of the positive reception Internet search giant Google (google.com) received from investors this week. On Thursday, Google officially began trading on the tech-heavy Nasdaq stock market and began Friday at over $100 per share, up significantly from its debut price of $85.According to Netcraft, Google's successful IPO is being touted as a bellwether of investor confidence in Internet companies, something not seen since the dotcom bubble burst several years back.

Hosting companies and industry analysts however, remain cautious despite the improvement in market conditions. The Web hosting industry has seen more failure than success when it comes to public ownership. Public companies such as Exodus, Global Crossing, WorldCom, Metromedia Fiber Network and Cable & Wireless America were among the high-profile bankruptcies in 2001-2003 while others like Sprint struggled and eventually exited the Web hosting market. Others never even made it that far. In the fall of 2000, managed hosting provider Inflow (inflow.com) backed off from a planned public offering amid the rough market conditions.
Netcraft also cited recent strong results from IBM (ibm.com), AT&T (att.com) and Equinix (equinix.com) as further evidence of an improving investment environment.
