Aug 26, 2004 : Global Server Sales Up, Gartner Says


📅 - Research and analysis firm Gartner (gartner.com) said on Wednesday that global sales of servers surpassed $11.5 billion in the second quarter of 2004, an increase of 7.7 percent over the same period a year ago.

On the basis of server revenue, IBM (ibm.com) held on to its top position with 30.7 percent market share in the second quarter of 2004. Hewlett-Packard (hp.com) followed with 27.3 percent, while Sun (sun.com) and Dell dell.com) held 13.0 and 9.8 percent market share respectively. Dell was the fastest growing server vendor, growing 20.1 percent from the second quarter of 2003 to the second quarter of 2004. IBM was a distant second in terms of growth at 10.8 percent.
Gartner also reported that worldwide server shipments surpassed 1.6 million units in the second quarter of 2004, an increase of 24.5 percent over the same period last year. Hewlett-Packard led all vendors with 463,489 units shipped in the second quarter.
In server operating systems, Linux continued to show strong double-digit growth in both revenue and shipments, Gartner said. Linux revenue grew 54.6 percent in the second quarter, and its unit shipments increased 61.6 percent. Linux represented 9.5 percent of overall server operating system revenue.
According to Gartner, Microsoft Windows accounted for 34.4 percent of worldwide operating system revenue. Unix continued to decline, losing 4.3 percent of revenue and more than 4 points of market share in the second quarter.
