📅 - Network security provider Sophos (sophos.com) said Thursday that it had published the results of its research on the top twelve spam producing countries. Researchers from SophosLabs, Sophos' global network of virus and spam analysis centers, inspected messages received at its global network of spam traps from January 2005 through March 2005. The United States topped the list once again, producing an average of 35.70 percent of all spam during this timeframe. The remaining top spam producing countries included: South Korea, with 24.98 percent; China (including Hong Kong) with 9.71 percent; France, with 3.19 percent; and Spain, at 2.74 percent. "The percentage of spam produced by the US has fallen 12 percent since January compared to other countries," says Gregg Mastoras, senior security analyst at Sophos. "This trend is likely because many ISPs are enforcing policies to ensure that they do not knowingly provide network services to spammers. "Some may speculate that the CAN-Spam Act has also helped thwart spam, but at this point we haven't seen any evidence that would correlate the drop off to the Act - time will tell."
