US DataPort explores self-generated power for data centers

📅 - While the California power crisis has technology companies worried about interruptions in their electrical power, businesses are beginning to explore the possibilities of self-generating. Internet data center builder US DataPort (usdataport.com) is among the first companies looking into providing its own power full-time for a facility it is planning in the city of San Jose.
US DataPort says it is unlikely to use the Pacific Gas and Electric power grid because the company simply does not have the power to give. In seeking to provide its own power, the company is pointing the way to what could become a much more common solution for businesses concerned about adequate electricity for complex data centers and Web hosting facilities. Instead of installing a backup generator, says US DataPort, companies may decide they want to be grid-isolated.
The San Jose server farm facility, when fully developed, will probably consume more than 150 megawatts. According to US DataPort's five-year plan, approved this week by San Jose City Council, will create approximately 2.2 million square feet of data center space. The center could potentially serve 30 per cent of the world's Internet traffic.
US DataPort was given a permit to produce approximately 49 megawatts of power from a natural gas generator in order to power the site. The city of San Jose has given the company a two-year window to come up with other sources of power, and US DataPort is required to develop additional sources when the 49 megawatts becomes insufficient.
While diesel power may be one alternative, environmental concerns and state legislature have placed strict restrictions on the use of diesel burning. But analysts say restrictions may have to be curbed until an alternative is found to fight the energy shortage, claiming that Californian businesses have to keep running, and diesel is a short-term alternative.
