Nov 16, 2005 : Sun, Partners Launch Sun Secure Mail

📅 - Sun Microsystems (sun.com), in conjunction with Echoworx (echoworx.com) and Lucent Technologies (lucent.com) announced on Wednesday that it had introduced Sun Secure Mail.

Sun Secure Mail is a fully managed hosted service that subscribers can use to send encrypted email from their existing email or Webmail applications. The messages are digitally signed and encrypted by a trusted authority and can only be opened by a recipient with a private key. No software download is required as only a small plug-in is automatically downloaded into the user's email application when during activation.

The service will be offered through email service providers and ISPs, jointly managed by Sun and Lucent. Lucent will provide the hosting and Echoworx's software will power the email encryption. Service providers will be able to re-brand the service and no infrastructure installation is needed. The companies say the service enables service providers to deploy an email infrastructure without incurring the setup, maintenance, billing and provisioning costs.

"We are essentially delivering IT as a service. Rather than worry about the infrastructure needed to set this up themselves, the ISP or email provider can offer it quickly to customers as a hosted service," says Andy Sheldon, executive director of partner and industry marketing at Sun Microsystems.
